My Graphis Card is displaying incorrectly

Asked by Bill Turner

I am a Ubuntu newby and am trying to resurrect an old HP Notebook. When I log into Ubuntu I get horizontal lines across the screen and all apps have the same problem making it difficult to work with Ubuntu. The problem started when I upgrades to Ubuntu 20.04 so I reinstalled the upgrade but the problem persisted. I then went back and reinstalled 19.10 but the problem still persisted. I have now gone back to 18.04 and the problem appears to be less obvious but does still occur from time to time. I have not been able to identify any specific patterns to the problem. Following is the output from the Graphics Troubleshooting Procedure Step 2.

The notebook that is running Ubuntu is a HP Pavillion DV9000 and Ubuntu is installed on the Hard Drive.

Hopefully someone has had a similar problem and there is a fix. If it is the Graphics Card then it probably isn't worth replacing.

Do you have the latest BIOS?
Also, check the connection between the system and screen isn't flakey

Thanks for your input. I will check the BIOS. How do I check the connection between the system and the screen on a notebook?

Does it wiggle or appear loose? Just look around it and try wiggling it gently to see if there is any extra movement you wouldn't expect

Nothing appears loose and moving the Laptop lid around does nothing for the connection. Also I have checked the BIOS and it appears the Laptop is no longer supported by HP and there are no BIOS Updates available.

If you use an external display, is it OK?

A very good suggestion which I had not thought off. Unfortunately the same problem occurs on an external display.

Is the issue the same in something like OpenSUSE (basically a non-Debian based distribution)?
If you boot to a Windows installer media do you see the same pattern?

If so then it is more than likely a hardware issue rather than the OS.

I have loaded OpenSUSE and there are no lines on the screen but there does still appear to be graphic issues. With OpenSUSE every mouse/trackerpad selection generate some abstract patterns on the screen most of which go away once the mouse selection is finished/loaded.
