Sound Settings for Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS

Asked by Peter V fiorentino

Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS will not save my sound settings after I shut down. I want to save "line in" for input and "line out" for output, but I need to reconfigure these settings every time I boot up. The result is that the master volume setting is inoperative until I perform the reconfiguration. Shouldn't there be a "confirmation" button on this page to "lock" my preferences?

If you use pavucontrol is it OK? Is this what you are using anyway?

I am using the GNOME Control Center that is bundled with Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS. I am not familiar with pavucontrol and do not know if it is compatible with Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS. At any rate, the "sound module" for the GNOME Control Center seems to have a "bug" that should be corrected. Thanks for responding!

It is compatible. It's in the default repositories. Try it

Please help me in finding "pavucontrol". I am new to Ubuntu and could not see it in the listed in the applications under"Ubuntu software". Is this a replacement desktop for Gnome? How do I get to the "default repositories"?

Thanks for your help!!

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

It's an audio application not a desktop environment. The default repositories... Surprisingly.... Are enabled by default so no additional action is needed to access them. The default repositories are where you install your OS updates from.

Hi Andrew:

I did a search for "pavucontrol" and it does not show up on my computer, nor has it been installed with my OS updates. Please tell me how to access this update. Is it a patch to the flawed GNOME Control Center ? Pardon my "newbie" knowledge, but I need more guidance. Also, tell me if I have correctly identified a "bug" in the "sound module" for the GNOME Control Center - or is it a unique problem with my installation or hardware?

Many thanks,

Peter Fiorentino

Hi Andrew:

I followed your instruction and got the message "command not found" in response. As I suspected, this patch or application was never installed on my computer. I went through all the applications on my repository (Ubuntu Software), performed a search for "pavucontrol", and made sure that my updates are current. Perhaps "pavucontrol" is not included in Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS? Please tell me if I should report my problem as a "bug" in the "sound module" for the GNOME Control Center.

Thanks for your prompt feedback!

Peter

In command #5 actionparsnip told how to install it:

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

Have you executed that command?

Manfred:

I am a "newbie" and not well versed in the specifics of command execution. Please help me, so I can get my sound "settings" to register correctly. I want to save "line in" for input and "line out" for output, but currently, I need to reconfigure these "settings" every time I boot up.

Please give me more guidance in how to execute the command "sudo apt-get install pavucontrol". As I told actionparsnip, I went through all the applications on my repository (Ubuntu Software), performed a search for "pavucontrol", and made sure that my updates are current. pavucontrol does not show up anywhere in the folder "Ubuntu Software". Was it supposed to be included in the default repositories with Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS?

thanks

Peter

Copy the command as given in your browser. Press CTRL + ALT + T afterwards. This will bring up the terminal.
Paste the command into the terminal and press ENTER
You now need to type your password that you log in to Ubuntu with. You won't get any feedback as you type but your input is registered. Press ENTER when done. The package will now install

Hi Andrew:

This solved my problem of attempting to install pavucontrol - however I still could not find it (as named) in the repositories. I still had to do an arduous "translation" of the file name to search for, and finally find it as listed.

It would have been extremely helpful if I was told the FULL name of this application (Pulse Audio Volume Control) at the outset of my queries - then I might have been able to find it in the default repositories from the beginning.

The assumption was apparently made that I already knew how "pavucontrol" was listed in the default repositories - but as a "newbie", that would have been highly unlikely. I do want to thank you and Manfred for promptly responding to my questions and for the support work you do for Ubuntu!

Finally, I also think that I still ought to submit a "bug report" concerning the apparent flaw in the GNOME Control Center that necessitated the additional use of Pulse Audio Volume Control to correct the problem. Please give me your opinion about this.

Thanks,
Peter V. Fiorentino

I gave you the exact command to run in the terminal so the fact that it's called the full name in the GUI application is irrelevant. All you had to do was run the command I gave and it would install the application you needed......

Hi Andrew:

Yes, apparently the application was "installed" - but how could I find it in the repositories without knowing the correct name, as listed in there? What led you to think that I would know the connection between the two names? Only those experienced with Ubuntu would know that! I told you from the beginning that I was a "newbie". Experts like you need to place yourself in the shoes of the "inexpert"- who need the guidance. I still await your opinion as to whether to file a "bug report".

"What led you to think that I would know the connection between the two names?"

I do not see the need for that.
Actionparsnip has given in comments #5 and #7 clear instructions what to do (two commands, "sudo apt-get install pavucontrol" and "pavucontrol").
If you want to do things different from what has been proposed, then please do not blame the supporters.

Let me first say that I had no intention of "blaming" the supporters - but politely and respectfully suggested that providing me with the full name of the recommended application (Pulse Audio Volume Control) would have enabled me to find it in the default repositories from the start. Now your implication that my suggestion was unfounded has insulted my intelligence and sense of fairness!

Please be aware that I asked Actionparsnip (comment #4) "Please help me in finding "pavucontrol". I am new to Ubuntu and could not see it in the listed applications under"Ubuntu software" It was clear then that I could not find this application in the repository under "pavucontrol" - and that providing me with the long name (Pulse Audio Volume Control) could have eliminated my confusion back in comment #5.

Finally, after submitting the command as suggested by Actionparsnip (in comment #11) - wouldn't I still need to access the application in the repository under its long name to use it? Therefore the question remains as to why I was not informed of the proper name at all? This resulted in 10 unnecessary communications and a great deal of confusion for me, as a less experienced person who clearly needed more guidance than was provided.

You don't need to find anything. I gave the commands to run. It's exactly why I give the replies I do. It saves having to explain how to find something in the UI using a text based interface here on Launchpad.net
