Are you able to see the "@" when key is pressed in any other OS and not in ubuntu ?
Try to replace your keyboard with your friends and try pressing "@" key.

Hi

I don't know how I would do that as it's on a Dell mini 9 laptop. The @ key
is not working in any application. Instead I am getting " character.

Thanks
Jak

Sounds as though your system is set up using the wrong country.

Are you perhaps in the UK? If so, then you will find your system is set up to use US settings. Other keys will also be incorrect for your country.

Under System, select Preferences, then keyboard. The second tab is entitled Layout - select that one. You will find the setting will be US I expect. Add your own country to the list, and make it the default one. Click Apply System wide.

Hi there
Thanks for the suggestion. I have added a UK keyboard layout but don't get
any options to make it the default. Is this something I have to do as
administrator? Feel like I am nearly there just not quite.

OK, as long as you have installed the UK keyboard, simply select the US entry and remove that entry. That will ensure your system is using the UK keyboard.
You will almost certainly have to restart X (or reboot your computer if that is easier for you) to ensure that all applications will use the UK layout.
