xp and ubuntu, XP not booting

Asked by Deekay

Hello there, first of all i'm new to ubuntu(and linux)... after i installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my machine it seems i can't boot windows xp anymore, after i pass the windows xp logo i get a screen that it couldn't find some files(probably partition magic files) and then pc restarts.. i tried to boot with safe mode but it didn't work also tried to recovery xp from the windows xp cd but it said there was no windows install on that partition, but i can still see my files and access them so i would like to know if there's a fix for my problem.. Thanks in advance

P.S. english is not my native language.

The right method to follow for dual boot : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

As per Partition magic error : Try running the recovery option from the XP CD and then do fixboot and fixmbr.

i tried the recovery option but told me there were no valid windows xp install on that hard drive.. it seems after i used the partition magic or the ubuntu setup one of them changed my main Drive letter from C: to E:.

Partition Magic has a warning when you run it, and it's in the manual.
Did you forget to 'Backup Your Data !!'{avoid using such software} , you could have gone for gparted rather.

Ok no problem now , mount the partition in which windows in installed from your ubuntu backup your data , by moving it to a different drive , reinstall windows and recover your ubuntu .
{save your /boot/grub/menu.lst }
