Details please:

Did this system boot before?
Was there a change (e.g. package updates or installation of additional programs) that may have caused this?
How much memory does the system have?

Yes this was booting well.
No changes as of my knowledge.
It has 512GB memory.

Does any of the options in grub (e.g. recovery mode - root command prompt) boot successfully?

Do I understand correctly:

The system has booted successfully in the past, but currently fails booting with "error: the initrd is too big" with all versions of the kernel installed on the hard disk, and also fails booting an installer that has worked previously?

Ideas:
- A Google search tells that in some cases removing "quiet splash" from the boot command line has helped.
- Try booting an Ubuntu 18.04.3 installer (with the 5.0.0 kernel).
