Resetting password on Ubuntu

Asked by Jace Weir

I am not able to make any changes to Ubuntu, as I don't have the correct password. I registered with Launchpad yesterday, and set a new password, which I thought would fix the problem, but it hasn't. What can I do to get a password that will work?

Don't confuse the password to login to your Ubuntu system with the password for the Launchpad web services. They are not related to each other.

If you cannot remember the password that has been set for your user account in Ubuntu, then you can reset it with the procedure described in https://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

Manfred,

Thank you for your help! The link that you sent me was completely
understandable, and I was able to change my password. I am still having
problems with two things: 1) Now that I can install & uninstall programs, I
tried uninstalling Simple Scan and reinstalling it to see whether I could
access my new HP all-in-one printer with a scanning option. Even when
reinstalling the Simple Scan program, it couldn't find the new scanner, but
is still looking for old scanners that are no longer present. I have
uninstalled two old printers, both of which had scanners, but there must be
something in the "system" that still exists that Simple Scan is "seeing".
So, I tried uninstalling Simple Scan and installed Scan Lite. Scan Lite is
also looking for the old scanners and can't seem to locate the new scanner.
What should I do? 2) My second problem is Thunderbird. I was using this
program for my email (gmail) until it abruptly quit working and asked me
for a password. This happened a year ago, and I just quit using it, and
went directly to gmail. Since I now have a working password, I thought I
would try Thunderbird again, since I like it. It doesn't accept my new
password either! Any suggestions?

I am not a programmer, so instructions really have to be simple for me to
be able to do it. The link you sent me to earlier today was so well
explained that I was confident to do it. If you can help me again, I would
be most grateful.

Let's start with some basic diagnostic commands.

Please open a terminal window (e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t) and issue the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
lsusb

Then use the terminal window's menu entries "edit - select all" and "edit - copy" and finally paste everything - either into the message box of your question document on launchpad https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/683995 - or into a mail reply to the e-mail notification that you have received.

And for the Thunderbird problem: I assume that there you have to provide the password that belongs to your e-mail account.

Thanks, Manfred, I’ll try this tomorrow, and let you know what I found. Regarding Thunderbird, I never had a password, as it was on my Desktop computer. The request to use my password to gain access to Thunderbird came out of the blue. I have no idea what the password might be.

Manfred,

Since I have been able to actually make changes to the software, now that I
have a working password, I have updated to the latest version of Ubuntu. It
took a couple of days, due to the fact I had to update from 14.04 to 16.04
to 18.04.
So here is what I found when I used your commands:

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

jace@jace-Dell-DM061:~$ uname -a

Hopefully this information will help you help me. Since upgrading the
software, I did get rid of the previous printer/scanner info (apparently).
However, when I try to install Simple Scan, it says I need the drivers,
which I install, but then nothing happens. The icon for Simple Scan does
not show up on my desktop, and while I can bring Simple Scan up onto the
screen using Activities, it asks for the drivers to be downloaded. Back to
square one here. I deleted Thunderbird, and I'll try installing it again
and see whether I can create a new password.

Your help, again, is much appreciated.

Apparently the upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04 went ok.

For the issue with the HP Printer please execute the command

hp-info

and copy/paste all output.

Manfred,

Here are the results (output) of the HP command, as requested. I notice
there is no mention of the LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw printer in the text.
Perhaps that's why Simple Scan is not showing up?

Yesterday, when using the newly updated version of Ubuntu, it took me to
Login Keyring. I don't know what this is, but I could not login with my
password.

When using Firefox, there is no longer a menu of options in the upper left
hand corner of the screen (such as print, history, bookmarks, etc.). How
can I reinstall this option?

I uninstalled Thunderbird, and will try reinstalling it today, and see
whether I can reset the password.

Thanks again for your help!

Jace

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".

How is the LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw connected to your computer?
The output of the command "lsusb" shows only the HP LaserJet 1300 Printer, and this is also listed by the hp-info command.

I don't know *how* the printer is connected, but it shows up as one of two
printers on my computer, and I can print using this (desktop) computer. I
did not use the CD provided by HP to install the printer, as it
(apparently) can't be used for Linux. I used HP's Linux driver installation
software.

There are two possibilities, how the LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw printer is connected:
Either direct by USB cable (like the LaserJet 1300 printer)
Or via networking

If it is via networking, then you have to tell the computer, how to access that printer (e.g. which network address).

Both printers are connected by USB cables. Downloading Thunderbird does not
appear to have worked. The download appears to be complete, but program
would not launch.

What output do you receive if you plug the LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw printer into the computer, switch it on and execute the command
lsusb

And for thunderbird, what happens if you open a terminal window and execute the command
thunderbird

Manfred,

I used the commands you gave me. I tried unplugging the USB cable from the
printer to the computer, and executing lsusb, and as you can see, the new
printer doesn't show up. So I tried shutting the printer off, plugging in
the USB, and then executing the command, and still no printer. I kept
trying this as the printer went through its paces after turning it on, but
no printer shows up. I tried executing the command for Thunderbird, but I
can't interpret the results. Thunderbird is still not showing up. Not sure
what "success" is referring to.

1. For the printer:
If the printer is switched on, connected with the USB cable, but still not shows with the lsusb command - then I have no idea what there is going on.

2. For thunderbird:
Run the command

snap refresh thunderbird --ignore-validation

and then try running it with the command

thunderbird

again. What happens?

Hi Manfred,

Here's the result for Thunderbird.

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

jace@jace-Dell-DM061:~$ snap refresh thunderbird -ignore-validation
error: unknown flag `i'
jace@jace-Dell-DM061:~$ thunderbird
/snap/thunderbird/30/bin/desktop-launch: line 544:

format error
/snap/thunderbird/30/bin/desktop-launch: line 544:
/snap/thunderbird/30/thunderbird-bin: Success

There are two dash characters!
Please use copy and paste!

Sorry, I overlooked that!
See result below:

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo <command>".
See "man sudo_root" for details.

jace@jace-Dell-DM061:~$ snap refresh thunderbird --ignore-validation
thunderbird (beta) 60.3.0 from Ken VanDine refreshed
jace@jace-Dell-DM061:~$ thunderbird
/snap/thunderbird/30/bin/desktop-launch: line 544:
/snap/thunderbird/30/thunderbird-bin: cannot execute binary file: Exec
format error
/snap/thunderbird/30/bin/desktop-launch: line 544:
/snap/thunderbird/30/thunderbird-bin: Success
jace@jace-Dell-DM061:~$

It appears the extra dash didn't fix the problem! :) It's also quite clear
to me that Linux is not a program for non-technical people such as myself.
You have been very generous with your time, and I appreciate your patience,
Manfred. My wife and I have decided the time spent on trying to fix things
on Linux could be spent on other more rewarding activities. We're going to
get a new computer, and stick with Windows as the operating system. It may
be inferior to Linux, but I just don't have the issues with any other
computer we use, which all use Windows.

Thanks again for all your help, Manfred

Before you give up, I have a final suggestion for thunderbird.

Try the following commands:

snap remove thunderbird
sudo apt install thunderbird
thunderbird

At this point, it asks for a password. I'm using the only password I'm
aware of, and it's rejected. There is apparently a phantom password in the
mix that I am unaware of. All of the updating of the Ubuntu software has
also affected my wife's Thunderbird. Now her regular password does not
work. Unlike me, she does use a password each time she uses Thunderbird,
and that password no longer works. Hence, our desire to scrap Linux and go
to Windows.

If a program asks for a password, then it should show details, what kind of password it wants.

e.g.: The command "sudo apt install thunderbird" gives "[sudo] password for jace:". So it asks for the Ubuntu password of user jace.

If you try starting thunderbird, is there any hint which password it wants?

I never needed a password to get into Thunderbird until a year ago. While
we were away on a holiday, Thunderbird suddenly quit working, and asked for
a password. I thought I could fix it once we were home, but nothing worked.
During the current updating process, I was able to establish a password to
allow me to make changes to Ubuntu, including uninstalling and installing
programs. I was hopeful that the new password I established would work for
Thunderbird, but it doesn't. Furthermore, my wife always uses a password to
get into Thunderbird, and now that password no longer works. I have no idea
what the password is for Thunderbird.

How does the box look like where the password is asked?
