frequent system problem warning but no data on what

Asked by Mike

My system (Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS) runs fine but frequently pops up a "A System Warning" message with options to send the message on or cancel. Cancel seems effective until the next time and send the message on does not appear to have any response or ability to find out even summary detail on what the problem is so that I can have a further look myself. Any ideas on how to open up this problem for inspection? It surely seems odd to tell me I have a problem but not what. PS The error messages pop up in no apparent relationship to keyboard actions by myself.
Is system repair run from a booted USB stick a viable choice? I don't want to open up a new can of worms.

Is this only when you first log in?
Does the system work OK regardless of the warning?

Thanks

For additional diagnostics, what is the output of the command

ls -l /var/crash/

Replying to Manfred and actionparsnip,

Before receiving your responses, I read some, removed and reinstalled
LibreOffice, and then ran "sudo rm /var/crash/*" which appears to have
cleared the old crash files, and , fingers crossed, stopped the problem.
