some DVDs are not recognized by the internal dvd drive and cause Ubuntu to crash partially

Asked by Christian Lipp

I Installed on my new HP-Laptop 15-db0205 (AMD Ryzen 5 2500 quad-core, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HD, WIN10) Kubuntu 18.04 (kernel 4.18) in dualboot-mode.
Testing the internal dvd-device (Bus: USB) I discovered, that after inserting some dvds the device was running a short time but couldn't detect the dvd. The AMD Ryzen began to work up to 25% utilization (2 cpu kernels permanent100%). I tried to kill processes but this didn't work. I only could make 1st a soft shut down and 2nd a hard shutdown with pressing the power-button finally as the shut down-process did not come to an end.
The same movie dvds are detected by the same device with Windows10 AND (!!) also with Kubuntu 18.04 (kernel 4.15) on my Acer Laptop. I repeated the problem with Ubuntu 18.04 live AND the new Kubuntu 19.04 live (kernel 5.0.0-11-generic) and made these hardware probes:
https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=a3b10d6664
https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=91a45b8f3f
As I cannot decide whether I can insert a dvd without bringing Ubuntu into an undefined state, I can only insert known dvds or after starting window10 (I didn't found a rule, it happens also with elder dvds but not with all dvds, some dvds are detected and it seems that always the same dvds cause this problem).
So this is a thwo-fold problem:
1. dvds are not detected
2. partially crash of ubuntu
I also saved the log-files (system-log and kernel-log) and would like to upload these files, if this could help.
I don't know whether this is a kernel-driver-problem and what i can do next.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR REPLY AND YOUR ADVICE!

Christian Lipp

What sort of DVDs do you mean? Bought video DVDs? DVDs of your own data files?

this is what I wrote in my Email:
"Hi, only bought video-DVDs from amazon or local shop. If necessary I can name them or given more informations collected with my acer or with windows.
Thanks a lot for your quick question! Chr. Lipp"

Don't know why my Email was not successfull. Next time I only use launchpad.

I've installed VLC and all librarys for VLC direct after installing Kubuntu. The Problem is NOT to play a DVD. The Problem is: SOME DVDs cannot be mounted by Kubuntu as Kubuntu doesn't detect these movie-DVDs. Only a few movie-DVDs are detected and then the DVDs are mounted and I see them with Dolphin or play them with VLC. But many DVDs are not detected and not mounted.
When you insert a DVD, then 1st Ubuntu tries to mount it. This is the very 1st step before you can work with an inserted DVD. But when it is not mounted you can do nothing. And some of my movie-DVDs can not be mounted by Ubuntu. Ubuntu tries to do this and then after perhaps 1 minute, the dvd-device stops rotating and kubuntu comes into an undefined state (see my problem description) and processes are running endless up to 25% utilization of the AMD Ryzen processor. I repeated this about 20 times! I can only stop these never ending processes by a hard shut down pressing the power-button finally . Booting then windows on the same HP-laptop all of my dvds are detected.
I just tried it again opening VLC before inserting the dvd and tried to play the dvd directly after inserting it without waiting for a sucessfull mount. But vlc couldn't detect it too as kubuntu did'not mount it. And the mount process stopped and the systemlog notes: process systemd-udevd(4137 ) seq 3506 '/devices/pci.....usb3/3-1...../block/sr0' is taking a long time' AND later '.... block/sr0' killed...not tainted 4.18.0-17-generic ...call trace .... AND many kernel-processes are following: timeout... wait for completion AND the task manager shows 25% permanent processor utilization and i cannot stop this! And I cannot insert a 2nd dvd which was detected previously....

It's o.k. for me when I cannot work with every movie-dvd I insert. Then I will work with it with windows 10 as I can boot it on the same laptop.
BUT: Its NOT o.k. when Kubuntu crashes partially. A good operating system must handle such a situation without crashing! So my main problem is: How can I prevent this crash without giving up inserting any dvd or how can I repair this crah without making a hard shut down and then rebooting Kubuntu?

Can you help with this problem?
