Try installing the package gtk2-engines by issuing this command in a terminal window:

sudo apt install gtk2-engines

Manfred....Thanks for your response.
I have run in so many circles that I am losing track. Any way...these
prompts have disappeared
E: Unable to locate package libgtkmm-2.4-1c2:i386
E: Couldn't find any package by glob 'libgtkmm-2.4-1c2'
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'libgtkmm-2.4-1c2'
But I have run out of suggestions when I again launch this:
sh hplip-3.19.1.run
which quickly results in red text
RE-CHECKING DEPENDENCIES
------------------------
error: A required dependency 'cups (CUPS - Common Unix Printing System)' is
still missing.
error: Installation cannot continue without this dependency.
error: Please manually install this dependency and re-run this installer.
Then I found this snippet

sudo apt-get -f install hplip which resulted in a slew of actions.

But to no avail when I again launched hplip . Arrrrghhhh! Any
suggestion? (I'd rather be downing a beer in Diez!)

Oops, sorry for the wrong language - that probably was caused by trying to help on questions in different languages at the same time.

Please try the following:
Execute the commands

cups-config --version

sudo apt install --reinstall cups libcups2 libcups2-dev cups-bsd cups-client libcupsimage2-dev

cups-config --version

and copy/paste the full output that you receive into the question document..

1. Please take care when copy/pasting commands. Do not copy the commands from the e-mail notification that you receive, but from the original source on Launchpad, in your case https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/679339

The reason for this is the fact that you e-mail system is breaking commands into pieces. The "partial" command
sudo apt install --reinstall cups libcups2 libcups2-dev cups-bsd cups-
instead of
sudo apt install --reinstall cups libcups2 libcups2-dev cups-bsd cups-client libcupsimage2-dev
would do something different. (It would uninstall the cups package instead of re-installing it!)

2. You do not get any feedback on the "sudo password" prompt, no echo, not even '*' placeholders.
Just "blind" type the password and press the return key.

Sorry. I am at my wits' end. I do not know enough details about the HPLIP installer that I could tell why the installer still believes that cups isn't installed.

I recommend that you create a new question document in the area for HPLIP https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+addquestion adding the output of the installer to the question.

Thank you very much Manfred for your help on this. You seem to keep wild
hours! I appreciated your prompt and clear responses. Having browsed
lots of sites and posts, it is evident that CUPS-Linux flavours
installation is a work in progress. Intricate beyond my ken!
As you suggested, I've reposted the question at 679429

But the problem not resolved. I had to do other things. I think there is
something wonky in my system beyond my abilities.
