Can ubuntu be installed on Drive D of a C,D drive system: D is empty

I am running WIN XP on my C drive, D drive is empty. Can I install ubuntu from the ubuntu CD directly on to my D drive?

yes of course u can. just insert ur ubuntu installation cd and select the
empty D drive. ubuntu will format it to EXT3 format and will be installed
smoothly. to run both xp and ubuntu u have to make ur computer dual boot.

Note that the convention to use drive letters is a DOS/Windoze specific thing. When you use the Ubuntu CD, you will instead see two disk partitions or two disks, depending on your hardware.
Note also that "drive D" (which will probably be called sda2 or sdb1 in Ubuntu) will be erased when you install Ubuntu, so make sure it really is empty ;-)
