Do you dual boot the ssytem?
Do other PS/2 mice act the same?

I only have ubuntu 16.04 installed on this box.
I only have the one mouse, so I don't know if others will act up.

It is likely the mouse was either connected/disconnected when in use and damaged the chip/controller (sometimes happens) or the mouse is old (please forgive me), damaged itself and needs to be replaced.

There are PS/2 to USB adapters on Amazon or ebay available to remediate the problem though. PS/2 is considered obsolete by 2018 standards and its use is not recommended anymore, except for certain industrial applications.

NOTE: PS/2 does not like/accept repeated connects or (especially) disconnects without the possibility of hardware (mainboard) controller damage. Therefore one is strongly advised -not- to change PS/2 device power states (connect/disconnect) during operation (PC powered on / mainboard active and I/O controller under voltage). This does not apply to USB, which was specifically designed to handle connects/disconnects during system runtime.

Can you help with this problem?
