Thunderbird hangs on IMAP synchronization

Asked by Torsten Funk

I'm using Thunderbird 52.5.0 on Ubuntu 17.10 and it has been working already with my email accounts via IMAP. Since recently it connects to the server (status line: Connected to ....) but then endlessly tries to synchronize without any result. Only when quitting Thunderbird a crash report message is shown. Thunderbird responds normally to displaying emails, switching to the address book, even installing new add-ons via Internet. The account setup was working before, is unchanged and rechecked to be correct. The mail account also works on other computers.
I have reinstalled Thunderbird via Synaptics without any improvement. I don't believe the problem is caused by Thunderbird, rather somewhere in the underlying operating system. The problem started after I had tried to install some other application unsuccessfully. Any idea where to look?

Can you ping the server and connect to the socket with Telnet?

Is your email provider on your network or is it on the Internet somewhere? Who is the provider please?

Yes, I can ping the server. I can also reach the mailbox via the webmail
Interface from the same machine and via Thunderbird from another machine
on the same local network. I'm pretty sure it is not a network issue,
but a local processing issue, just don't know where to look further for
this. Thunderbird itself also says in the status line, that it has
connected to the server. And then the synchronization hangs.

The provider is Hosteurope in Germany, obviously on the internet.

Try:

sudo chown -R $USER:$USER ~/.mozilla

You don't need to change the command. It will substitute the names using the BASH variables. Run at as your user. It makes sure your user is the owner all the data. May help.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried it, but no improvement. Also
~/.mozilla only has subdirectories for firefox and extensions, but there
is another one ~/.thunderbird on which I applied the same command, also
without improvement.
