What WiFi chip are you using?
Which release of Ubuntu?
Is the OS fully updated (use a wired connection to get updates)

The Problem:
I installed Ubuntu alongside Windows Vista. Vista continues to work and connect to the internet as usual but Ubuntu gives message that Network Discovery is disabled and the network is not compatible with Avahi. I have another Ubuntu computer that connects just fine, but it also gives this message.

The message about Avahi and .local should not have any effect on the function of WLAN, see also Bug #327362

I assume that there must be something else preventing your wireless connection form working.
Please follow https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure with the only exception, that in step 3 you should not create a new question document, but put all output into this one which you have already created.
