My Brother QL-570 printer no longer works after upgrade to 16.04

Asked by geraintgymro

After several years on 12.04 happily using my QL-570 to print labels, I upgraded to 16.04. Alas, the printer refuses to print. I have reinstalled drivers (both foomatic and brother drivers) but no joy. When I ask the printer to print, the led flashes red and nothing happens.

I have tried this:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/831689/brother-ql570-labelprinter-driver-does-not-work

and this:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/749854/brother-ql-570-will-not-print

with no success.

I have an old copy of my system on which I have now installed the printer and it works nearly perfectly (bar the cutter). However I need to get this to work on my main machine.

ubuntu 16.04
AMD A4-4000 APU
64bit os typera

Thanks
Geraint Jones

How did you upgrade? Did you upgrade to 14.04 then to 16.04 using the web or did you do a clean install of 16.04 from USB / CD after removing the old install?

I upgraded using the web. Should I have listened to the little voice that kept saying "clean installs are better"?

Have now carried out a fresh install, and the printer still does not work on 16.04. This really is a problem for me as I use the printer professionally. I really don't want to have to buy a new printer....

I have been in touch with Vincent Louviaux (vincent-louviaux) - he still has the same problem, and runs VirtualBox to use the printer. I run an old 12.04 ubuntu.... I'd prefer to upgrade.

on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (trusty) is still ok
trusty : printer-driver-ptouch (1.3-8) OK
with 17.10 : printer-driver-ptouch (1.4.2-2) NOK

Vincent
