Thanks for the answer. Having typed the suggested command I recieved the
answer that skype 4.3 was already installed and a lot of linux packages
were not needed anymore. Offered to remove them. I accepted it and
having them removed coud install skype 5.5.0.1 with the normal
procedure. So the problem is solved. Thank you again for the tips. Best
regards

On the computer which was in the original question the problem has been
astonishingly resolved but on an oother machine all my efforts were in
vain. I made run sudo apt-get autoremove in order to remove the old
kernels, az it had been done automatically on the other one. But in
spite of this action done the installaton does not function by the
normal method. The file having .deb extension calls automatically the
ubuntu repository, but the installation does not start "waiting for
installation" appears. On trying sudo apt-get install skype the answer
appears: No such package has been downloaded for installation. The
translation is by myself because here the answer appears in Hungarian.
So the problem how to istall skype 5.5.0.1 on ubuntu 16.04 LTS 64 bit
still exists.

see Bug #1701746
I suggest that you try https:/
and https:/
Additional comment:
You seem to have inconsistencies in your sources.list configuration files.
You are running Ubuntu xenial, but there are sources for trusty enabled.

Thank you for your answer. As to the download: I did so althouh several
times through skype.com/hu. The result was always the same. Since there
was never such problem in installation of deb packages of third parties
even in the case of skype. I think there must be some bug in the deb
package in this case which prevents the installation. As to the sources:
in the update list I allowed only the xenial updates, as xenial
security, xenial updates, xenial-backports. I am afraid that the problem
is out of our competence since in the meantime I encountered the same
problem on an other compuer as well where upgrading of skype became
necessary as the old verson (4.3) of skype were no more supported. This
computer is running also ubuntu 16.04.

1. for the sources.list entry:
What is the output of the command
grep trusty /etc/apt/
2. for installing Skype:
What happens if you try downloading and installing the .deb file from the Skype web pages?

The trusty reminiscences may come from the past because the system has
been updated from trusty tahr (ubuntu 14.04), but now the trusty
installation CD is not among the designated sources.
2. In that case everything goes on the same way but the .deb file is not
saved on the computer. The result is also the same. I tried it several
times.

1. I assume that the "trusty" line is obsolete and can be removed, but to verify that please provide the output of the command
cat -n /etc/apt/
2. Why can't you save the .deb file on your system? Try using the right mouse button on the link and select "save target as..." (or it's Hungarian equivalent) to store the .deb file on your system.
Then try installing it with the command
sudo dkpg --install name_of_

2. This method gave finally an output that showed the reason of the
problem.
„The type of machine of the package is different (amd64) from that of
the system (i386)” Sorry I have thought that the system is the 64 bit
version, and did not verify it until now. So it was my fault and what a
trivial one! NB. programs from the ubuntu repository could be installed
without difficulty so I was not alert. Thank you for your effort and
useful help.

1. The "trusty partner" entry in your sources.list file is obsolete.
I recommend that you edit the confog file with the command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/
scroll to line 47 and delete the lines 47 to 52 (the whole block)
You already have the equivalent for xenial in lines 90 to 95.
2. As far as I know, there currently is no version of Skype for Ubuntu 32bit https:/
If you see the need to use skype, then you most probably have to change over to a 64bit operating system.

Thank you again for your help. The other compuer what I mentioned before
was running really 64 bit version (amd64). Nevertheles the istallation
was not possible on the normal way. Having the command autoremove run
the normal way was not yet possible, but with the command dpkg finally
skype 5.5.0.1 was successfully istalled. Also the problem has been
generally solved, but it is interesting why does not function the normal
.deb package installation method in this case. Have a nice day!

You are right. I had known before that only 64 version of skype was
avaiable. The worse is my fault that I did not verify the system. Anyhow
as I have written recently on 64 bit system was necessary to deviate
from the normal method. I will execute the modification in my sources
list, although It had no influence on this problem. When so much
effortis done let me have a perfect system. Thank you again.

Thanks actionparsnip, that solved my question.
