Obsolete hplip 3.15.2 default with ubuntu 16.04

Asked by Paul Garff

Why does ubuntu 16.04 LTS not have the most current version of HPLIP 3.17.9 configured with it?
My printer hp office jet 8710 is not supported with HPLIP 3.15.2. That is why it quit working after an upgrade.
I've tried to download the most current version of HPLIP but the downloaded script fails.
HELP!
HPLIP version needs to be at least 3.16.5 to support my new printer.

Ubuntu 17.04 has HPLIP 3.17.9 configured with it but no convenient way to upgrade to it. Why is it not offered?

Please reference bug # 1723112.

I suggest you report a bug.

Ubuntu isn't a rolling release distribution so packages do get left behind. You can easily install hplip from the hplip site using the installer on their Web page. Just mark it as executable and run it in a terminal as you leave user (without sudo)

The hplip package delivered for Ubuntu 16.04 is version 3.16.3+repack0-1 (and not 3.15.2), which, however, is still lower than the version 3.16.5 required by your printer.

I recommend that you download and install the current version from sourceforge
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/3.17.9/hplip-3.17.9.run/download

If you have problems with that, please provide details of the errors that you get.

I re-downloaded HPLIP-3.15.2.run and applied it to ubuntu 16.04 and got my
printer running again. HPLIP-3.16.5.run did not work. Thanks.
