installing Ubuntu

Asked by Raghavan

With High respects to the team,

My earlier mails in this forum.

After several attempts (spending more than 8 hours in each mirror site for downloading), I could download
only winrar archive files (>692 MB) and even after burning the CDs, i sincerely accept my failure to install.

Can any one help me a CD in India please.

with affection.

Why not go back to Ubuntu.com and find the link to order a CD of your own, it will take 6 to 10 weeks to get to you, but you will have the real thing and it works. In fact if you are just a little patient, you might be able to order a new version 9.04 which is due out in April.

If you can wait for a couple of weeks and then use

https://shipit.ubuntu.com/

then you should get a free Cd delivered to you in about 8 weeks time. I like to try to get one to show off to friends and let them use to install. Sometimes i order a spare one for me too ;)

I think the file you hav downloaded is really an iso, not a rar.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto#Windows
Note that most other programs for making cd's or dvd's have the same option. The instructions only show it for 1 program because there are so many different programs you could be using for this. Use your favourite but hunt for this "Image" option. Then you just select the file you downloaded.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

To all my not seen well wishers,

I am really fascinated by the overwhelming responses with in minutes of my question. I had a CD given
to me; intalled and using it for more than year. The CD was given fto a friend of mine and not recd. presumably, it has lost the track. I had changed my PC and I was desperate to intall Ubuntu.
I can wait for a CD; as for the past one week I tried and failed to install.

Thanks for all.

Brilliant, they were really fast!! Congratulations :)))

It'd be good to place another order for a 9.04 about now so that you can use it to upgrade to 9.04 in a couple of months time. Note that each Cd can be used by a lot of different people on a few different machines but it might be worth asking for a few Cds this time so that you can give one to your fried and keep one for yourself ;) It's always good to have a Cd that you can use to bootup from to help sort odd things out here and there. It's also good for showing off to friends on their machine :)

I'm really glad to hear you have an 8.10 already :) 8.10's are fully supported for another year so it's all good right now :))

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I will be requesting them to send some more CDs for distribution to my
friends. Incidentally, I am distributing a CD copy of this this version, to the needy friends, as they are fascinated to work on this platform too. But, many are users of vidieo, audios, Their doubt is compatability
of these softwares, plug-ins etc.

Dual-boot and learn things slowly. Medibuntu packages help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Somewhere in community documentation there's a list of Windows equivalents. They might like to see the linux equivalent of "Paint" is "Gimp" (which is much more sophisticated, more like photoshop than Paint lol)

Good luck and regards from

I think making sure you get to keep a copy of the Cd for yourself is quite a good plan. Sharing is one thing but it's good to look after yourself too. The only problem, about all this, that i think you are having over there is download speed.

Thank you for the reply.
1) reg. download speed - I have a broadband DSL 256 kbs internet
connection.
I have received the CD directly (8.10 version) and after installing,
the updates have also been installed (time taken is 1 hour 45 minutes
(speed is 32 to 33).

2) for version >9 it says it will take more than 4 hours - why
so please.

3) My request for those who are not having internet connection or
slow speed, is it possible to copy the updates (for version 8.10)
and distribute along with the CD copy.

4) Similarly for upgrade version.

I am used to Ubuntu now and feel equally comfortale with windows
XP.

Updating by Cd is still waaayyy beyond me. I gather that quite a few people do manage this and i guess sharing those update cd's is possible. It would be good if update cd's were available but perhaps it would be best restricted to main and commonly used applications or else the cd size might be too large. Perhaps this sharing Cd's idea is something that Loco teams offer? I haven't joined my 'local' Loco but think it's a good idea to and have considered joining occasionally.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
