I think your problem is CD Ubuntu doesn't running well on your laptop. Perhaps, you can read this site:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation

or try an alternate cd ones:
http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate

Please tell us your Cpu speed, Ram size and how much space you're giving Ubuntu on your hard-drive. Also do you try installing inside Windows?
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide

My machine is a long way over min.spec, Cpu 1.8GHz, Ram is 2Gb although i've only given Ubuntu about 10Gb hard-drive space and really should increase that. I installed by booting up from Cd, like this
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Another thing that would be interesting to know is can you bootup from the Cd and use the menu item "Try Ubuntu without installing" to get to a working desktop?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

There are a lot of other distros other than Ubuntu, perhaps trying a different one might help see what's going wrong?
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix

Don't install it, just try to run it from the cd without installing anything.

Does this work?
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

PS there's also this troubleshooting guide

Please uninstall it from inside Windows. The best way to try Ubuntu is to simply put the Cd in the Cd-drive and then switch your computer off and then on again, this reboot should get you to a menu that has "Try Ubuntu without installing anything" as the top option. Try it. This should get you to a working desktop comparable to Xp. Try some of the apps and see if you can connect to your network, internet and perhaps try to watch a movie or something stored on your Xp drive. Ubuntu is a little slower this way but it's always good to try a linux as a "LiveCd" in this way before installing anything, just to see how well it works and see if there are any problems with it. This guide should help if you have difficulties getting to the LiveCd desktop
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

Please let us know how it goes.

Your machine sounds quite high spec. so it should work easily, even inside Windows. I have a 64bit machine but find that 32bit Ubuntu is much better for my machine. Even 32bit versions of linux's are good at multi-threading and thoroughly using both cores of your machine. So if you're trying the 64bit Ubuntu try the 32bit version instead, as a 'LiveCd' as described above
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download

The best way to install Ubuntu properly is to follow these guides
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
but only if the LiveCd works. Please let us know ..

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
