I ran command again. the following is the output:
mcm@mcm-G31M-S2L:~$ sudo killall -v gnome-software
[sudo] password for mcm:
Killed gnome-software(
mcm@mcm-G31M-S2L:~$ gnome-software
After typing the command 'gnome-software', the terminal just hangs
without any further output.

Ok, understood.
Now try the same with the commands
sudo killall -v gnome-software
sudo killall -v gnome-software
gnome-software --version
gnome-software --mode updates
and copy/paste all output as done before.

The following is the output of commands suggested by you:
mcm@mcm-G31M-S2L:~$ sudo killall -v gnome-software
[sudo] password for mcm:
Killed gnome-software(
mcm@mcm-G31M-S2L:~$ sudo killall -v gnome-software
gnome-software: no process found
mcm@mcm-G31M-S2L:~$ gnome-software --version
gnome-software 3.22.7
mcm@mcm-G31M-S2L:~$ gnome-software --mode updates
Again, as before, the terminal just hangs without any further output after the last command.
