Asked by Mervyn Mitchell

Scanner problem in Feisty Ubuntu 7.04
canonscan N1240U/LiDE 30:04 does not scan with xane or kooka - both report scanner is there but when scan takes place only black appears
The light on the scanner does not come on or move- hence no scan
Using another Operating System it works OK and did in Ubuntu 6.06
Have rebooted, cold booted and done all the usual -

Thanks for your question.

Please don't open a question AND a bug report, unless you link your question to an existing bug. Additional to that, your bug is a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-backends/+bug/85488.

Unfortunatly, there's no easy solution. You'll find a few ideas in the mentioned bug report. Maybe you'll wait until the bug is fixed.

And BTW: I'm experiencing the same problem, but thought my scanner was defect. So thanks for the challenge to solve my own problem :-)

Sorry - I got confused
as well as not sure if the original report was sufficient without a
question as I saw no other comments or bugs .
Protocol is obviously not my forte :-[
Why does the search fail to find the relevant xsane or kooka or canoscan
bugs or questions? - at least I could have known I was in good company
even if a good (i.e simple one off for end-user) answer is not there.
How can a non-geek know to look for 'sane-backends' when his scanner
doesn't work?

My answer might have sound a little bit harsh. That wasn't my intention. It might have something to do with my language skills, so don't feel reprehended. :-)

Most times, it's enough to open a question. You'll find a lot of helper who'll assist you searching the bug tracker, which is -your right with that- not easy for beginners. For example, I searched google with the term "ubuntu bugs lide" and found the "right" bug with lots of information on how the scanner don't work.

As you seem quite interested in the topic, I'd like to recommend a few links you might find interesting:

"language skills" = "lack of language skills" :-)

Dear Ubuntu Developer and Bug Subscribers
Having read with interest ( and some sadness) the latest comments on progress with resolving / or rather not resolving the "bug" and the rather spurious discussion on how many machines that use USB are affected, I have decided to continue to use Mandriva 2007 - It works - It is not as nice as Ubuntu but it works as they say 'Out of the Box' .
Client applied Bug fixes went out in the early nineties - Now we expect more reliability
I am sure that I am not alone in voting with my feet.
Most people who find that the machine (operating system) doesn't do what it says on the label don't bother to complain - they just bin it and move on.
I do not intend going to Vesper or what ever - I intend staying with Linux
Please try and remember that satisfying your Client's needs are paramount for you to succeed
The reason most of us use Linux is because we don't like being dictated too by Big Brother who knows best.

p.s. should I have clicked " I solved this problem on my Own" instead of "I'm still having This Problem"?
