is it a rar or iso file???

If rar just untar it using winrar or winzip for windows case, or in case you're working on linux OS, you can write into a terminal (Applications => Accessories => Terminal) :

tar xvf filename.tar

You'll get an extracted iso file which needs to be burned on a CD (take the option of writing an iso image for the case of windows and if it's linux just write in your terminal:

sudo wodim filename.iso

After getting that CD, restart your system and boot from it. That's all :)

Do you mean .iso file (rather than .rar)? Official versions (and even most unofficial) of Ubuntu are distributed in .iso format. If that is not what you downloaded I would visit http://www.ubuntu.com/ and get the official version first. If that is what you have then make sure you have properly burned it to a CD. For help with that see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto. If you have done both of these, please provide more information as to what you have tried and what isn't working. Also, be sure you are booting the CD. Sometimes this involves making a change in the BIOS to boot CD before hard drive.

Ubuntu does not come in rar format. It should be in ISO format.

Using your CD writer software, select the "Burn from CD image" (or from ISO file) option and record the ISO file to a CD-ROM.

To check that you have successfully recorded the ISO to the CD, the CD should show a series of files and/or directories. If you have not successfully recorded the ISO but merely copied the file to the CD, you will see a file with the same name as the original ISO file.

When you have successfully recorded the ISO, boot from the disc to start the "Live" session. An option to install will appear on the Ubuntu Live desktop.

From where did you get this info (I mean the "ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso" thing).
Is it the file that you found after unzipping or just the properties of your first archive?

Try downloading the iso from the official site - give it 5minutes to settle down to a fast download speed but if it still looks like it's going to take over an hour then stop the download.
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download
It looks like the iso is in your rar but if opening the rar file and dragging the iso out into your documents folder didn't work then maybe someone will have a cunning plan.

I'm wondering if you have defragmented your Windows recently? The 1 month free trial of "PerfectDisk" is really good, especially for doing an off-line system-files defrag. A google search might help. Note that if your defragging then it's wise to leave the computer to do that without running any other apps while it's busy. The basic Windows Defrag tool is a bit dodgy but usually is good enough.

There some pages on how to make a Cd but i haven't looked to see if there's help on getting the iso out of the rar. There is a search tool at the top of the documentation page here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
Usually with these guides i just quickly glance through them and only read them in-depth if my first attempt didn't work out. Just seeing the pictures/screen-shots is often a good-enough guide ;)

Note that with linux's it's usually best to bootup from the Cd and try options like "Try Ubuntu without installing anything to my hard-drive". We call it a "LiveCd session"
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD
Most distro's of linux have this option and it's a great way to get a rough idea of how easy it's going to be to set up the distro on your hardware and whether you like the "look and feel" of the distro. Of course it is slower than a proper install but is still a good demo.

Some people try to install Ubuntu inside Windows but although it does often work very well a very much better, safer and faster way is to struggle through this route
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
There's a bit to learn about partitioning but thte Ubuntu installer guides you through that much more easily than the guide implies. We just like to make sure you're able to get more than enough information where possible. The proper dual-boot method described in the link is much easier to get rid of if yu decide you don't like it but it's a much more robust way to run Ubuntu while still having access to your Windows - which then allows you plenty of time to learn enough about linux without struggling against a deadline. Many of us keep a Windows boot available even if we hardly ever use it.

I hope this hasn't been too long and that there's something useful in there somewhere!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Has it finished downloading this time? If it's going to take a long time again then it migh be worth try ig a different "mirror". On the
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/getubuntu/download
where it says "Choose a download location near you", just above the green download button choose a different location. the nearest one is usually the fastest but not always, and clearly not in this case. Another location might well be a lot faster. I sometimes get 2 or 3 going and cancel out the slowest ones until i'm left with the fastest.

It's definitely the official site and everything so you're clearly doing things right.

Good luck with this, hope it went well

I think it's a iso files ....

Sometimes if you are using windows and have winrar installed, the iso file icon should be change to winrar icon ...

Same case here

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/60865

Go to folder option in windows, click view tab, and uncheck option Hide extensions for known file types ....

And now look at your file, please make sure, it's .iso or .rar

Thank you

Hi, thanks for your kind message in the other thread. We're glad to help whenever we can.

I wonder if you could try out a completely different idea, just to see if it works. Try downloading and making a Cd of another distro called sliTaz, it's not as good as Ubuntu so don't install it. It's a lot smaller than Ubuntu, it's only 30Mb rather than 700Mb so it should download faster and make a better LiveCd
http://www.slitaz.org/en/get/#stable
in the line
SliTaz GNU/Linux 1.0 (24,8 Mb) - slitaz-1.0.iso [ md5 | Torrent ]
click on the "slitaz-1.0.iso" part and it should download quite fast. Please let me know how it goes.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
