Log in stops loading

Upgraded from 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS
Logging in. When I log in the screen partially loads and stops part way and all icons are froze. Have too reboot CPU. Doesn't always happen but is frustrating.

Yes. Lots of free space on my disk.
Log in as guest is OK.
Issue does not happen every time. Random.

Have you tested your RAM using Memtest86 from GRUB?

No I have not tested my ram. How would you do it using Memtest86 from GRUB

Hold SHIFT at boot then use cursor keys and ENTER to run the test

Tried. Get message saying:
error: malformed file.
Press any key to continue

Shows in top L corner of black screen when I try to reboot holding SHIFT key

Still can't get into grub holding down shift when rebooting.

Still says:
