No Mic With Feisty

Asked by RichPicker

I apologize if this is a redundant report. I don't know if a bug has been filed, or only questions asked and answered

My mic worked with Edgy, after some help from you. Then an upgrade killed it. I waited for Feisty, installed Feisty, and the mic still does not work.

I am a new person to Linux. Forgive me if I am not reporting this correctly. I am using a Dell laptop, Intel 386

It is an external mic that plugs in next to the headphone in the side of the sound card. I have checked that all capture volumes are on max, nothing is muted, the mic works itself, and it is plugged in correctly. It does not work with Sound Recorder or Audacity. Thank you.

Thanks for your detailed report Rich. After having a look at it, I would kindly ask you for a couple of additional info:

1) the output od an lspci -v command
2) the output of an lsmod command
3) the output of an ls -la /dev/snd/* command
3) the output of a cat /tmp/alsainfo/alsa-hda-intel.tmp command

I would also ask you to check in Menu->System->Preferences->Sound what is selected in the Sound Capture entry, what entries are available and if you tested them all.

Can I assume that you have no other sound problem except this?
Can I also assume that you checked this is not an hardware error (ie. everything works with another OS)?

Cesare:
Thank you for your prompt reply.

The 4 outputs are attached as plain text documents.

In System>Preferences>Sound Preferences I have the
following Sound Capture options:

STAC92xx Analog
ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
OSS - Open Sound System
Test Sound
Silence

I have tested each of these.

I am 99.99% positive the microphone functions
correctly. Just to be sure, I will perform another
test after I send this email, and then reply with
those test results.

Thank you.

This is strange indeed, there are no capture devices explicitely listed.
All the rest seems ok, I need to investigate this further.

It is possible that the model is not detected correctly. Here is a list of possible modes applicable to your codec chip:

ref Reference board
3stack D945 3stack
5stack D945 5stack + SPDIF

I think you can try ref first and then one of the other two if ref doesn't work (I assume you have a Dell D945).

This needs to be added to the file /etc/modprobe.d/options as a new line:

options snd-hda-intel model=XXX

where XXX is one of ref, 3stack, 5stack.

Forgot to mention it, you need to restart after each modification.

It is a Dell Inspiron 1300., Intel. does that make a
difference?

I don't fully understand how to add these to the
modprobe file, but I will do my best.

I bought a new microphone from Circuit City, and
tested it in the store, and it worked on the PC in the
store, but not on my laptop. So, the mic itself is
good.

I will edit the modprobe.

That did it. THANK YOU THANK YOU.

I am soooo stupid. Instead of adding this:
options snd-hda-intel model=ref

I added this:
options snd-hda-intel model-ref

Just that ONE character off, and I caused you and
others your precious time.

Thank you for your help. Please forgive my lack of
ability.

I've actually tried both and it seems that it causes errors no matter where I put the line.

Updating the Alsa driver worked for me.

I put more information and instructions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2798055#post2798055

Sorry to bother you again. After re-installing Feisty yesterday, and rebuilding my system I can NOT get the mic to work again.

I have added the correct line of text to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
I have configured System>Preferences>Sound
But no mic. And Audacity locks up when I try to record.

One thing I notice that's not right is Volume Control has only one tab - the Playback tab.
It should have Playback, Capture, Switches, and Record.

I downloaded a driver from the Alsa site. It's a folder on my desktop, but I don't know how to install it from the desktop, or with the Archive Manager.
So, I followed the steps here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/88570/comments/19
But I get this in the terminal when I enter the ./configure command

rich@rich-laptop:~/alsa-driver-1.0.14rc4$ ./configure
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
rich@rich-laptop:~/alsa-driver-1.0.14rc4$

I will send the config.log if you wish. To me it seems to say the same thing "cannot create executables"

Thanks again for your help.

Wouldn't be better to open a new question instead of adding to an old one?

Have a look at this on how to install the drivers from ALSA:

I'm trying to hide it at the bottom of an existing
question, because I'm embarrassed that I'm so totally
stupid with this.

I don't know how to download it to a directory (eg.
~/downloads). When I click the link I get 2 choices,
Open with Archive Mangager, and Save to Disc. I don't
know what to do with it in Archive Manager, and when
it saves to disc it puts it on the desktop.

The instructions are simple, but I lack so much basic
understanding I get lost quickly,.

If it saves to Desktop use ~/Desktop instead of ~/downloads

It gives the same error:

rich@rich-laptop:/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.14rc4$
sudo ./configure --with-cards=hda-intel
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name...
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.
rich@rich-laptop:/usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver-1.0.14rc4$

I'll start a new question.
