Were you ever able to listen to sound? What kind of sound card to you have?

If possible, can you do two things for me:

1) Go to SYSTEM > PREFERENCES > SOUND
And let me know what is selected OR select the correct sound device. Click "TEST" by each individual item. See if you get sound. This may clear up your issue. Then voilá!

2) Go to http://pastebin.ca in a browser window
3) Open a terminal window
4) Type:
lspci -v > lspci_output
5) Type:
gedit lspci_output
6) You are now in an editor window. Go to EDIT > SELECT ALL, then EDIT > COPY
7) Go back to your browser (in pastebin.ca) and paste then contents of what you had in lspci_output
8) Hit "Submit Post"
9) Come back here and respond to these questions and give me/us the pastebin.ca URL. It will help us troubleshoot a bit.

Thanks a lot!

Try this:
# apt-get update
# apt-get install w32codecs
# apt-get install vlc /*Optionally*/
# apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins* /*Not sure in these packages*/

This should work

PS: I badly speak English=\

Play mp3 and dvd under Ubuntu install skype googleearth acroread and other stuffs using Medibuntu

First please install https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

You need to have extra repositories enabled..

Please first enable the universe and multiverse repository:

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Tab Ubuntu software ]

enable "Community-maintained Open Source software ( universe )"
enable "Proprietary drivers for devices ( restricted )"
enable "Software restrictecd by copyright or legal issue ( multiverse )"

Close and confirm the repository reload.

Type the following command in a terminal (applications → accessories → terminal)

sudo aptitude install vlc smplayer mplayer

To get better dvd playback and optional packages here the medibuntu available software list http://packages.medibuntu.org/
you need to add the medibuntu http://www.medibuntu.org/ repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list file:
( here the medibuntu howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu but see below )

In short type or better copy and paste the rows, below one row a time then press enter:

ubu_codename=$(sudo lsb_release -c | cut -d: -f 2 | sed 's/^[ \t]*//;s/[ \t]*$//')
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$ubu_codename.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - && sudo apt-get update

Now to install, type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras libxine1-ffmpeg
sudo aptitude install libdvdread3 libdvdnav4 libdvdcss2 regionset gnome-mplayer
sudo aptitude install non-free-codecs w32codecs
sudo aptitude install gstreamer0.10-pitfdll gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
sudo aptitude install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

You can also install other Medibuntu repository provided optional software http://packages.medibuntu.org/ :

sudo apt-get install skype
sudo apt-get install googleearth
sudo apt-get install acroread

p.s. sometimes googleearth with compiz active don't work very well please disable compiz from:
System→Preferences→ Appearance→[Visual Effects] set then to "None"

Hope this helps

What apt/aptitude/dpkg said about "vlc installing"?
What error you get when installing codecs? And what version of operating system you use?

Version of ubuntu i am using is
Ubuntu 7.10

when i am trying to install VLC thr' synaptic package manager, getting these things
vlc:
Depends: vlc-nox but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libsdl-image1.2 (>=1.2.5) but it is not installable
Depends: ttf-dejavu but it is not installable

Now I am using totem movie player
when i am playing an mp3 format song
getting an error:
"Search for suitable codec?
The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to install suitable codecs to play media files. Do you want to search for a codec that supports the selected file?

The search will also include software which is not officially supported."

When i click on search
As a resultant i get gstreamer extra plugins
When i try to install
getting error:

"Cannot install 'gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly'
This application conflicts with other installed software. To install 'gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly' the conflicting software must be removed first.

Switch to the 'synaptic' package manager to resolve this conflict."

An error occurred
The playback of this movie requires a MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) decoder plugin which is not installed.

Ahah, that explains why you're having problems. 7.10 is no longer supported, please upgrade to 8.04 (LTS means it has much much longer term support than most releases) or upgrade to the very nice 8.10 and then upgrade to 9.04 in April (or May after the inevitable issues have been 'ironed out')

Alternatively reinstall 8.10 (or 8.04) over the top of your current install - there are various ways of helping retain data and settings, please ask if the Upgrade ubuntu button doesn't work.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
