First go to System->Administration->Printing via the GNOME menus at the top of the screen. Double click "Add Printer" and see if it detects either your Canon or Brother printers connected to your computer. If this works proceed with setup. Often printers work fine with CUPS using an older printer driver even though the latest models haven't been added to the list.

If that doesn't work try the following for the Brother printer (not sure on Canon):

1. Go here:
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/cups_drivers.html#2
2. Download the Debian ".deb" file for your printer.
3. Install it by running "sudo dpkg -i filename.deb". Ignore any errors it spits out.
4. Go to System->Administration->Printing via the GNOME menus at the top of your screen. Right click on the new printer model it created and see if you can configure it to be on the port you need.

Thanks Philip

I havent been able to get the cannon working. When it searches it seems
to find the printer calling it cannon MF8100 series (it is MF8180c) and
selects a driver BJC600 then loads but doesnt print a test page.

I have tried to find help on the net and would appreciate any other help
you can offer.

I have just started with Ubuntu and and hope to put in a few workstation
in our company

Thanks
Mark

ma66rk,

Not sure what to tell you. Entries found via this webform document a number of known issues using the MF series printers in Linux (namely no support whatsoever).
http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi

I'd suggest complaining to Canon and not buying their printers in the future. =(

Also, here's a list of printers supported by CUPS:
http://www.easysw.com/cups/printers.php?START=0&MAKE=&MODEL=

Sorry I can't be of any further help. Printer driver support has improved extensively over the years with Linux but it's still not 100%.

Can you help with this problem?
