WD My Passport not recognized USB 3.0 USB 2.,0 OK

Asked by tomdean

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS - Linux P9X79 4.4.0-78-generic \
       #99-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 27 15:29:09 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
P9X79 Motherboard
Plugable 7-port powered USB 3.0 Hub
Plugable 7-port powered USB 2.0 Hub
WD My Passport 2T USB 3.0/2.0 Drive

If I plug the WD drive into the USB 3.0 hub and boot, it works. If I disconnect the drive, wait 30 seconds, plug it back into the same port, it is not seen.

If I plug the WD drive into the USB 2.0 hub, it is recognized and works. If I disconnect the drive, wait 30 seconds, plug it back into the same port, it is recognized and works.

Seems like something in the USB 3.0 chain is being loaded or not unloaded and thus the drive is not recognized if it is connected to USB 3.0 anytime other than pre-boot.

Any ideas?

What driver does this use? usb_storage, uas?

With the WD drive connected to the USB 3.0 hub,

sudo lsusb -v

causes the drive to be scanned (the led blinks) and it works.

There is a bug about this: 1242321
