I need to know how to view the hd where my ubuntu is located

Asked by Wil

I installed ubuntu on my 2nd partition using Wubi, so that none of my files would be messed with.

The problem is that I can only view the folder on this drive where Ubuntu is installed. I can view the other drives.
But, on the drive that ubuntu is installed on, I can only view the folder on the drive, but, not the whole drive.

I hate Microsoft! I am trying to break away.

Try Gparted. Maybe it helps. You can install it by Synaptic or by typing "sudo apt-get install Gparted".

Hope it helps.

Here, try this way of setting up a dual-boot. Howeveer much you hate M$ at the moment i still recommend keeping a legit version of Windows and just adding in a decent Dual-boot. The Wubi just compounds problems with each OS but this way gets the best of both
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

You might need to get into Wubi and reduce it's size - maybe. I'm not sure how the Wubi works - mostly it just doesn't.

Good luck and regards from

I still have the problem. Gparted DID allow me thru Ubuntu to see the drive my Ubuntu folder is located in....But, I can't find a way to access the surrounding HD while in Ubuntu.

Until such a time as Ubuntu can access and manage EVERYTHING I do with a computer, as much as I loath and despise M$, I have to keep a genuine copy of windows running.

I noticed that you guys don't seem to think very highly of WUBI, but I really like it, in that it allows me to have my winXP and Vista in a dual boot (They were already in place before I got Ubuntu) and still install Ubuntu and have what is now a fully funtioning Tri-Boot setup, WITHOUT damaging my already existing Win OS's.

But, it seems to me a way should exist, OR be MADE to be able to access the HD that surrounds the Ubuntu folder.....I guess this is just a bug....and I will have to wait until someone resolves it.

I am slowly beginning to like Linux,..but, it still has a ways to go. I am looking forward to when I can leave M$ for good...meanwhile, things like MSdos apps, AOL, Yahoo messanger areforcing me to hang on to Windows.

I think multi-boot with a Windows and a Linux are definitely the best way to be. I'm not sure what Aol is but there are various packages for instant messengering in Ubuntu but the ones i've seen seem to bring it together from various sources. I'm a strictly into emailing only tho.

Good luck and regards from

Would someone please respond to me who is familiar with ALL areas of Ubuntu. Installed correctly WUBI IS a part of a win/Linux multi-boot!

It is installed with windows...but, once installed...it BOOTs (Starts up the computer from a cold shut-down)...individually, by itself as a stand alone OS.

My question I can't seem to get a straight answer from ANYWHERE or ANYONE, is that WHY does it read ALL drives EXCEPT the host drive where the folder is at? But, yet it reads it's folder. This IS a BUG!

I am both reporting it AND asking has someone resolved this yet, or...do I patiently wait?

Wubi is only good if it works straight away. If there's any problems with it then that's usually caused by Windows problems.

When you bootup you'll notice that the Windows splash screen appears with a Windows progress bar before offering a Windows multi-boot-loader menu. Once problems start happening with the Wubi then it's best to setup a proper dual-boot so that Ubuntu is not reliant on Windows systems in order to work. If this is done sooner then Wubi can be migrated across at which point most of the problems magically drop-away. If left then you can expect to have to deal with one problem after another and some taking ages to fix only to find that Wubi suddenly becomes completely unavailable due to some Windows bug/virus or general security or instability issue. At the moment you have the chance to do a proper stable linux install and to move everything across from Windows fairly painlessly.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

PS Ubuntu only needs about 8Gb to install to and use but after creating it it's easy to expand it's partition with gparted. This doesn't create a mess as it has needed to be used quite often so people have ironed out any problems that may have existed in the distant past

First, there is NO windows progress bar when I boot up under Linux....Linux launches from the beginning. Second...I don't know any other way to partition any space for Linux without damaging existing data.

Any method I use to partition Linux under Gparted warns me ALL existing data will be destroyed. Using WUBI I'm able to install in a folder on my HD without damaging anything.

So, if you know of another way I can partition a spot on my HD, please let me know.

Resizing the partition gives the same warning?

If your Windows is Vista then resizing would have to be done from within Vista, presumably the same with Win7. However Xp and before are normally stable enough to allow resizing a partition as an alternative to deleting a partition which is obviously worth avoiding. When resizing Xp and earlier versions they would have to have been shutdown properly rather than hibernated or by pulling the plug.

Although i would prefer to prepare partition space in advance of doing an install i would also read through
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
in order to be more familiar with the process before i started.

Good luck with this.

Hi,
I don't know if this concerns 'Wubi', but if the boot menu doesn't offer to select Window$, you may try to edit the menu.lst, because it's about module chaining.

No i think its just being in Wubi and unable to see stuff on ntfs but samba is there and should be reading stuff. Worth a try tho, thanks Sam :)

Is it something to do with that "external drives" question?

so I assume one hdd with two or whatever partitions.

hence, don't get confused with the title from the link above, I've just picked it for an example to add to menu.lst, but as I said, I don't know if it concerns this funny 'Wubi'. ##Ok, admit I'm very happy without M$.
