can not install Ubuntu

Asked by Echo9

I have just got a dell laptop with no OS installed on it so I decided to try out Ubuntu instead of buying another copy of windows. The problem that I am having is that it keeps saying the following when testing my newly burned DVD:

[ 258. 525570 ] end_request : I/O error, dev sr0, sector 9193976
[ 258. 525615 ] Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 1149247

Now this follows the same error on several [ .. ] section but I do not know what those refer to. I have followed the instructions to a tea from this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
I have validated my downloaded file to make sure it is right from this link: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Sadly the past 5 DVD have failed the test biult into the OS every time I try to install it on my laptop. Any help would be great I also burned it at a 4x speed so I do not think that is the issue as specified in this thread: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/19682

Thank you for your help.

Did you make a CheckSum for the downloaded iso-file? If you have questions about CheckSum, read the following page:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

It contains also hints to make the check in a MAC or a Windows system. I guess somewhere you downloaded Ubuntu - and there you can also make the check.

Hope it helps.

Ubuntu should fit onto a cd and the much slower burn speeds help. On the help page some of the advice is completely irrelevant but i think something there should help.

Good luck with this

Dohh, just read your question more carefully! lol, sorry please ignore my last post!

Ok, can you try burning a much lighter version of Ubuntu called Xubuntu and/or also try a much lighter OS, a tiny distro of linux such as Wolvix?

Good luck with this

Hmmm. Well Puppy has worked on a machine that Wolvix wouldn't but i more often find Wolvix working where Puppy wouldn't. SliTaz can be good too.

However, it's not sounding good if Ubuntu and Puppy are both coming up with the same problem then someone needs to hunt through hardware incompatibilities and i'm mostly busy with other things until after the weekend :( Also the only page i have is
http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw
but i think the proper Ubuntu one would probably be better as it's really Ubutu that we want on these machines.

Good luck and happy hunting you two

Tom

The "only page" you had is full of great info, & leads to more. I'm
gonna have a lot of fun now.
  Many thanks,

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.

If the problem has been resolved then please follow the link to the forum thread and mark it as Solved.

Good luck and many regards from
Tom :)
