http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw

has a list of known hardware that works but is very out-of-date as people are shy about contributing to the list (even if they know it's there!)

If you try installing Ubutu using the proper dual-boot method
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/iso
then if Ubuntu doesn't work it'll be easy to get rid of. Also this way means you can cary on using your existing OS part0time until ready to move over to Ubuntu full-time ;)

Good luck with this
Regards from
Tom

PS Pleeease avoid the Wubi install, instead of combining the best of both OS's as the above method does the Wubi combines the worst

Yep, it's compatible.
I have a thinkpad W500 which has switchable both the standard intel GMA4500 and an external ATI fire GL, and both work fine (the external ATI took a couple of months to have a driver ready, and the GMA worked out-of-the box).
Make sure you have the intel driver (that comes with the Ubuntu installation, not some external junk) enabled - it should be automatic or ask you at some point during/shortly after the installation (forgot how it was).

Thanks a lot for the answers, indeed this intel adapter is compatible with the 8.10 version. I used grub for the instalation and now I have both systems running without trouble.

I have as Sony VAIO VGN-FW245 laptop with the Intel GMA 4500 Mobile Intel 4 Series Chipset Family and I had to use the SAFE (VESA) graphics mode to run Ubuntu 8.10 from CD and then when I installed 8.10, I was left with only two resolutions: 640x480 & 800x600. My display has a 16:9 ratio (1600x900 Widescreen resolution) and 800x600 is not an acceptable resolution. I would like a driver that lets me use 1600x900 or come close to that resolution. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my first distro and with the exception of this graphics problem, my migration to Ubuntu from Vista has been smooth and an overall
pain-free experience. Most everything has "just worked" from jump.

Running Ubuntu 8.10 x64 w/ all Updates on:

Sony VAIO VGN-FW245 w/ Core2Duo t5800 @ 2.0GHz w/4GB RAM
and integrated Intel GMA 4500 Mobile 4 Series Chipset Family

Thanks in advance!

That's strange. I think I even used the vesa at some point, and it gave me all options. Can you post your /etc/x11/xorg.conf ?
Also, did you 1) update your system after installing from CD and 2) try to install the intel graphics driver that comes standard in ubuntu (I don't know whether you need to enable universe or multiverse)?

I went to the following link and followed the directions and I now have all resolutions up to 1600x900.

Congrats on fixing it :)
I guess in your case, the bit that fixed it was installing the intel driver, and not a problem with the driver itself.
