Netboot image 20070308ubuntu40 failed to install

Asked by bart1452

My computer specs:
Compaq Presario SR1550nx with 3400+ AMD Athlon 64 processor, 1 Gig ram, 200 GB hard drive, Light Scribe DVD/CD R/W, Windows XP is already installed so I'm installing a dual boot system. The Windows system was checked for errors and defragmented prior to trying to install Ubuntu.

I downloaded the Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit LTS minimal install ISO image and burned the CD at 16X, much slower than the 40X offered, and this speed worked for installing the 32 bit system on my old laptop successfully. The computer boots up into to the installation program but there is a very slow retrieval of initial components, like it waits in que for a long time for each component. After guided partioning is complete, error "Failed to download base system" appeared with about 8% download completed. Second try - "Failed getting release file" error appeared, couldn't download Aptitude and a lot of other packages. Several tries were made and all failed. I chose "Abort Installation" and retried after several base system installation attempts.

I also tried the 64 bit standard installation CD I burned, but after it booted up, the process seemed to hang about halfway through.

What do I do?

Dont use the minimal CD, its for very advanced users.

Boot the Standard CD, choose the option "Check CD for defects"
Try to boot the Standard CD on " Safe Graphics Mode "

If you are still in trouble... please reboot your pc and starting with Ubuntu live cd please try to put some common Ubuntu kernel live cd options you can find the boot options howto here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

Remove the "splash" and "quiet" options to see more boot infos message and/or errors.
Then try some commons parameters by putting them one by one or together:
noacpi noapic noapm nolapic nodma all_generic_ide pnpbios=off pci=noacpi

Juan,

Thanks. I checked the live CD and it has 3 errors, so I'm downloading the file again and getting ready to burn another disc at 8X to see if that fixes things.

Juan,

I use the minimal CD on my laptop after having problems after the installation on the laptop from a live CD. The laptop has worked perfectly and the minimal CD is now my prefered way of going. I'll check the minimal 64 bit CD for errors after downloading the live CD image again (again, the live CD has 3 errors.) I just assumed that since the minimal CD booted and the installation progression appeared to be having problems only with the package downloads the CD was fine.

No. What is different about it?

By the way, I tried to check the md5sum on the primary file and it didn't match. It turned out that the hash on file is for the older version, 8.04.1, when 8.04.2 is now being distributed. I notified the webmaster.

I'm going to try the alternate. After I re-downloaded the live 64 bit image and burned it, it came up with 3 errors again when I had it check itself. That should be reported and checked by someone in the project.

Normal 32bit should be the best for your desktop machine. 64bit can be a bit iffy sometimes
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/iso
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot
Please don't be offended about me sending you these links. Clearly something is going wrong and a quick flick through might point out something obvious. It's a "waggle the wires" type answer - sorry. Obviously the package used to burn the iso in the article is probably out of date now but i think they are all quite similar in some ways. Slow burn is better so i don't know why that's not already fixed the problem. Perhaps try burning a tiny distro and see if that works as a LiveCd - ie boot from it but don't install anything. SliTaz or Wolvix might be helpful to have for the future anyway

Good luck with this

Umm bart, when you reply to this forum please delete off all of the email we sent you which is already posted in the forum thread. If you follow the link to the forum thread you'll see it just makes it confusing here. Don't worry about it because we all did the same when we were new so we understand why its happening.

Best regards from
Tom

OOPS! I should just go to this webpage and reply here instead of my email.

I am trying a different mirror for the file and seeing if that helps. If not, then I will be installing the 32 bit version. It works great on my laptop. I was hoping to benefit from any added functionality the 64 bit version would have on a 64 bit machine, not that I have a clue what to expect.

The download website has changed, in case you haven't visited it lately. It offers much fewer options of how to download and which form of the system to download. I can't even find an alternate version without needing Bittorent.

lol, its ok. I have a 64bit machine too but 'only' 2Gb Ram (which si waaaay more than i need with Ubuntu) so i tried out the 32bit version to see if there was any change but actually found it a lot better. I use conky so i can constantly see how much each core is being used and am happy to say the 32bit Ubuntu uses both in a very efficient manner. Multi-threading in this way and reading over 2Gb Ram seem to be about the only differences between 32bit and 64bit versions of most OS's at the moment. Happily the 32bit version seems better/faster for me.

sorry about that typo there. The 64bit machine does seem quite a bit faster even on 32bit Ubuntu and perhaps a bit more stable too. Not entirely sure as my last machine was pretty stable too. I'm pretty certain i'm not pushing my machine to its limits even tho its over-clocked from 1,8Ghz to 2.8Ghz and chips only 35 to 45 degrees - usually 35. But that's all good because it reduces wear-and-tear and means it'll last longer and work better.

Nice to hear that the 64 bit version isn't really any benefit, at least for now. I would suppose it would multi task better and there may be software that needs a 64 bit system. I went ahead and installed the 32 bit version. I still have download issues and had to go with almost none of the software options during the installation, for some reason it still seems to be downloading with the progress bar graph stuck at 6% when I believe it should be finished. Either the Ubuntu Desktop is bigger than I thought or maybe the 32 bit CD is scratched and needs replacing.

With that said, I'll call the problem solved by switching to the 32 bit Ubuntu 8.04 system. The 64 bit system image appears corrupted to me.

Thanks you Juan and Tom for your help.

Regards,
Dave
