after install ubuntu will not open it just sits

Asked by Alfred

I am a new user and downloaded the Ubuntu cd.It installs Ok alongside Windows XP professional and boots up to show the ubuntu sliding scale on screen Then it changes to a small section of the sliding scale and stops. It wont move to open the program
I have tried both 8.4 & 8.10 but the same thing happens.
I have also tried pressing esc for the menu and all the choices given without success.I have typed in "Help" for commands but as a new user cant understand what all the words are for.
I would be obliged if you could help me with this problem as I do so want to use your program

Hmmm, sounds like you installed Ubuntu from within Windows?

A better instal is to follow these instructions ...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

Ubuntu 8.10 32bit is generally better but the support cycle is longer on 8.04 32bit. 9.04 is one the way (the .04 shows the release date is April) so i still think that 8.10 is the best bet but i would consider 8.04 if i was responsible for a large number of machines at work.

Good luck with this

Tom

many thanks Tom but the problem remains
Following your instructions the Cd boots up Ok then the logo and onwards until it reaches the page where its setting up Kernels/bluetooth etc then it just sticks forever
I thought it would be a simple excercise to install but I havent got the patience for all this hassle

Hello Alfred,

sorry to hear your having so much trouble. can you give us more info on your computer? make/model? pc/laptop? are there any external devices or internal daughterboards you can remove that are not necessary for installation? for example like a usb camera, or a PCI tv tuner. just the bare minimum to get you up and running so we can see what device is causing the system to hault and how we can fix it.

okay now we're making some progress. it looks like you have two different hard disk controllers, an IDE and a SATA. can you boot off the liveCD successfully if you disable the IDE controller in your bios?

The cd can boot up succesfully with the IDE disabled.I have tried both
installs one thru windows and the other from bootup and the result is always
the same as follows....
Passing the logo the black screen appears with the following text;

Loading,please wait
Busybox V1.10.2 (Ubuntu1:1:10.2-1Ubuntu-1 Ubuntu)
Built in shell (ash) enter Help for list of commands
(initramfs

From hereon it just sits
