Ubuntu 8.10 hash OK wont load from CD

Asked by David Stacey

I have a P4 Dell Dimension 3100 (On the approved list). I have made sure all the hardware has been approved, as best I can.
I am still running XP but read I could boot from this CD I copied. Checked the MD5SUM and it is OK.
Was hoping to do the hardware check with the slimmed down version that can be loaded from this disk.
Will I have to format my C drive first? What do I do?

Thanks for your prompt response but your "guide" presumes I can boot from this CD. (I have already changed my boot sequence)

I would also prefer NOT to have a duel boot, or anything else to do with windows :-)

What happens when you try to boot from the CD?

Thanks; it just loads windows as normal. The system seems to recognise my CD Drive since I recently (Yesterday) installed a wireless driver from the factory CD.

Yes the Device manager shows the CD/DVD drive and there are no problems.
I have been able to use other discs to load drivers and play games.
this seems to be pointing to the CD Disc which is Memorex CD-R. The attributes are "read only", but I believe this is normal. The disc is shown as Full. Could some kind of "Finalizing" of the disk caused this?

I have never seen anything else except the normal loading of Windows XP SP3. I have rechecked the Bios to make sure it boots from CD first. I will put a MS system disc in to see if it recognizes that.

yes do that. The disk if you used nero it would finalize for you. what program was used?

The CD will be shown as full. You can press F12 during the initial startup to get a boot menu, although if you've set the boot order correctly it should be ok.
You did write the install ISO as a disk image and not as a single file when you burned the CD?

No, it was just Roxio.
It recognized the xp system set-up disc.
I tried everything again and although I got a flashing cursor on the left side for 5 seconds it did not say "press any key..."
I have just reloaded the Bios driver and see if it works now.
Next step will be to see if I can update my bios somehow. This maybe just a manufacturing quirk since my ethernet has already burnt out on the motherboard.
I have to go to work shortly, thanks for trying so far :-)

If the guide was written in a more step by step method a warning about how to go about the burning would have helped. Burn a CD is obviously not always done the same way. To learn more I went to: http://www.bay-wolf.com/burnimage.htm
