The CUPS scheduler is not running

Asked by Keith Morris

I have upgraded to 8.10 and CUPS is no longer running.

I have a Brother MFC-215C printer/scaner connected via USB.

I am unable to restart cups because the command "sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart" gives "sudo: /etc/init.d/cupsys: command not found"

This question/answer looks similar to my situation:

Do I really need to start from scratch and re-install the printer?

Thanks

Having re-read question 49993, (and let it sink in while making dinner) I have the simple solution:

1) Delete the symbolic link /etc/init.d/cups --> /etc/init.d/cupsys
Start nautilus with the correct permissions to do the delete
 - sudo nautilus

2) Reinstall the cups package so that we get /etc/init.d/cups back
From the System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
Search for cups
Mark the cups package for Reinstallation.
Apply.

In the end I'm slightly embarrassed to have answered my own question.
Hope this helps others.
