Upgraded to xubuntu 8.10. Cups though installed isn't rcognised. Therefore what was a good printer on 8.04 is now not working. There must be simalar problems with others and some one surely has managed to correct the problem. Please share the answer with me and others who are in the same boat.In advance many thanks. JGK

Asked by jgkellt001

After upgrading to Xubuntu 8.10 my printer(Brother MFC_215C using 210c drivers, no longer works. The problem lies with CUPS. Others must have experienced the same problem. The system can't find CUPS even though it's there. I had no problems prior to the 8.10 upgrade.

I have uninstalled CUPS and reinstalled it via Synaptic, but the problem persists. I have attempted to restart CUPS in terminal but

Error messages are;
The CUPS server could not be contacted.
The CUPS scheduler is not running.

Has anyone managed to correct the problem yet?

P.S. Because of this printing problem, I haven't had time to see how good or not 8.10 is. I can't help thinking, that for all the faults with Windows at least it always finds printers and other hardware!

Not being completley computer literate, i notice there is a programme called Samba. Is this connected to the problem?

Just to add that I have experienced exactly the same situation with CUPS not running as before with Hardy 8.04. I am a complete newbie, but would guess that the issue is independent of Samba (which is a file & printer sharing server/client package). I'm hoping the matter will soon be solved via an Update available through System>Administration>Update Manager as like you I'm really missing the ability to print. Have seen this same issue raised in a number of forums - will certainly post a solution if I hear of one.

Same as you Kiriath, though I've yet to have anyone in Ubuntu acknowledge this problem. Hopefully update manager or a reply will come to the recue. If i find a way out I'll let you know.

Cheers

In the interim I am printing to file, selecting PDF output format, which prints to the PDF folder in your home directory, so that I can go back and print everything when the issue is solved. (For urgent matters will copy PDF file to memory stick so that it can be printed on another machine as I am not on a network with other printers available).

Just installes xubuntu 8.10 as a first time user. Its running on my laptop and it picked up wireless no problem and installed fine. However printing is a problem. I have an XP system attached to an HP PSC 1410 printer. Xubuntu using samba picks up the printer and i've installed the driver from the drop down list so laptop appears to be configured correctly. I've set up the XP box correctly (I think) so that it has the necessary unix print driver (Lpd) selected so in theory this should all work....alas! not. Someone tell me its a bug in 8.10 that will be fixed soon before I pul my hair out!

Thanks

I've also just upgraded, from 8.04 to 8.10, and am experiencing the same problem - "The CUPS scheduler is not running". Browsing to http://localhost:631
fails. Printer is a network connected Brother MFC-5440cn. I can't see anything in the logs that suggests a problem.

The link /etc/init.d/cups points to /etc/init.d/cupsys, which DOESN'T EXIST. CUPS 1.3.9-2 is showing as installed. I have re-installed (using Synaptic package manager): CUPS, CUPS-client, and CUPS-common components.

Cheers
Tim

I've managed to progress a little in respect of the printer. I now get the message, "Printer MFC-215C may not be connected". I un-installed everything to do with the printer including CUPS and the driver files. Turned off and disconnected the printer and re installed the driver,Cups, Cupswraper etc,,, After re connecting and powering up the printer, I found I was now communicating with CUPS , but although it knows the printer is there it won't print, hence the above message. I have submitted a request for help to Brother and assuming they come up with a fix, I will post the answer.

Just to give an update to anyone interested, Brother have phoned me (Good Customer Service Tactics!) and have said they will look into the problem. Apparently there was a similar problem on 8.04 with the driver. Hopefully they will come up with an answer.

I've managed to get my printer going by:
- Removing symbolic link /etc/init.d/cups --> /etc/init.d/cupsys
- Uninstalling then reinstalling components: cups, brother-cups-wrapper-common, cups-bsd (I suspect that only a reinstall of cups was required). This got CUPS up and running again.
- Reinstalling the printer:
  - sudo mkdir /var/spool/lpd
  - sudo dpkg -i --force-all mfc5440cnlpr-1.0.2-1.i386.deb
  - sudo apt-get install csh
  - sudo dpkg -i --force-all cupswrappermfc5440cn_1.0.0-1_i386.deb
  - Then opened http://localhost:631, "Manager Printers"
  - Should see the MFC5440CN printer, click "Modify Printer"
  - Device is "AppSocket/HP JetDirect"
  - Device URI is "socket://192.168.15.102" (printer IP)
  - Provide PPD file from /usr/share/cups/model/brmfc5440cn_cups.ppd

My guess is that if I had removed the link before starting the upgrade to 8.10 this problem would not have occurred. Before reinstalling the printer, I was getting the same "Printer ... may not be connected" message that John was getting.

Good luck John...

Cheers
Tim

I solved this by deleting the (now broken) link and reinstalling the cups package.
Thank for the pointer to the solution.
