Sorry, i the wrong key in frustration. What i was saying its no wander that people turn to windows because you can always get help no matter what level you are at. I've had two very kind people try an help for which i'm very greatful, but considering the size of the forum i would have expected to be inundated with responses. Perhaps what the say is true Linux is for the elite and not for us mere minions.

It takes time for some people to get to you. I'm having an issue in another forum and I didn't get a response until about an hour later. I'm having a similar issue so I'm going to keep looking at your thread for a response. Sorry I'm of no help either bro :(

The ndiswrapper from much earlier sounds like a lot of hassle but worth it.

Linux is frustrating for a noob (i'm still one myself really but not having any problems at the moment). It took me many years to get used to Windows but only a few weeks to get a good feel of what to do in Linux. It really helps when people use the little they know to help others in here so that more complex issues can be handled by people with a greater expertise. I hope that answering a question doesn't dissuade people rom trying their answers out to because it's not always easy to get to the root of the trouble an language tends to be ambiguous at best, even assuming the noob can work out the specific problem.

Linux depends on the community and that's one reason i prefer Ubuntu - you guys are great. Keep up the good work.

Martin i hope you find a good answer to this, please post it back here if you find it through google or elsewhere as that increases the knowledge base and helps other people searching through the bugs/answers forums which often yields good results that may not be on-line at the time.

Thanks for all your responses. I've tried reinstaling the dvd containing 8.10 lost the wireless driver so i'm beginning to believe its a disk problem. .I will try and download from the ubuntu site and re-install to see if this can give me a new angle to go at. I'm begining to feel this is a jouney only i'm ment to take and once i've reached my destination i will inform the forum of my solution. I will keep in touch, home life and work permitting.

May all your troubles be small......but interesting!

Has an older linux kernel been tried yet as suggested in
http://ohioloco.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1006384&page=2

I think i might find doing something like that a bit technical but it seems the latest kernel has some issues on certain laptops. As i'm not clear what the issues are but do know that many laptops rely on wireless i jumped to a conclusion.

Anyway the latest kernel is 2.6.27 i believe but i think 2.6.24 suffered from the same issue so it might be worth trying the one before that. People who have put a different kernel into a current Ubuntu say its really easy but of course i don't believe anything anyone says ;)

Good luck trying this, please let me know how you get on with it

To find out what kernel you are currently using try opening a terminal console from
Applications - Accessories - Terminal
and type in
uname -a

If you are still having trouble with this then please post it as a new question. Only the most recent questions tend to get looked at so posting/reposting a question just before america arrives online gives the best chance of getting a good few answers.

If the problem has been resolved then please follow the link to the forum thread and mark it as Solved.

Good luck and many regards from
Tom :)
