ubuntu 8.10 doesn't see my wireless card therefore can't conect to my wireless router

Asked by martin

I'm really new to LINUX and i would like to know more about the subject so i thought i would do a clean install on an unused laptop i have by way of a mechanism to help me understand this OS. I've installed 8.10 onto the laptop and every thing seems to work but NM doesn't even see my wireless card and i can't figure out how to tell it to. I've used some of the answers i've seen on the site to pull up some of the information that may be required but as i'm new i don't know how to attach the file for viewing on the site. I've an idea that i'm missing the absolute obvious but please be understanding. If anyone can help i would be very greatful. By way of showing my newness i'm having trouble adding simple drivers and software as i don't have a direct internet link so i'm using my Vista machine as the download mechanism and a memory stick.

The information you've collected might certainly be helpful to understand the issue.

I don't see any possibility to attach files here either.

Just pick a free file sharing service, upload the file there and post the address here. (See e.g. http://www.all-the-free-space.com if you don't know any suitable file sharing service)

I think i've understood that their appears to be no driver installed but i feel that is only part of the problem i don't feel the OS is seeing my wireless card. Am i right.

Same thing happen to me with my Belkin Wireless G Note Book Card, this is what I did. I went into the System menu in the top taskbar. Then click Hardware Drivers. After that there was a check box that asked me if I wanted to enable my card, and once I clicked the check mark box, I could go online using my wireless.

When I did this, I did it when 8.04 was out. Hope it works.

Hi Martin,

well, the operating systems sees 1 wireless card in your machine:

  *-network:0 UNCLAIMED
       description: Ethernet controller
product: Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter
       vendor: Atheros Communications Inc.

I don't know exactly what the UNCLAIMED means, but I guess no component of the operating system can do anything with this card as a result of missing or conflicting drivers.

I don't know this card nor the details of WLAN drivers, but feeding "Atheros AR5001X+ linux" into Google results in 7200 hits. So you are not the first one... Even "Atheros AR5001X+ Ubuntu" produces enough to read...

If Linux drivers don't work / are not available for your card you might try ndiswrapper. It allows you to use Windows drivers with the Linux kernel (with some limitations). I have never been forced to use it, but this post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=564419 has been thanked a lot, so maybe it also helps you.
