can't reboot Ubuntu- crashed while downloading updates. Do I have to use recovery disk & start over?

While downloading 177 updates(?), my system froze. I shut it down using control/alt/delete and now I can't get it to load. Get error message- terminated with status 1. Am a real novice with computers- what should I do?
