can't reboot Ubuntu- crashed while downloading updates. Do I have to use recovery disk & start over?

Asked by Searobin60

While downloading 177 updates(?), my system froze. I shut it down using control/alt/delete and now I can't get it to load. Get error message- terminated with status 1. Am a real novice with computers- what should I do?

I'm a noob as well and recently installed ubuntu. I had a similar error but it was status 4. You'll need to a manual fsck according to the instructions, but type this in instead: "fsck -y". It should correct any errors. It worked for me, but now I have another issue that I'm trying to correct.

I hope this helps.

Sorry to be so "green" but how do I do a fsck-y?

you need to type fsck -y (with a space in between) the -y switch tells fsck to attempt to repair any file system corruption automatically. You can't use fsck on a mounted partition, so you will need to boot off a liveCD first to try to repair the filesystem.

Can you help with this problem?
