logitech quickcam stx not working in skype (intrepid)

Asked by sk

I have separate partitions running Hardy and Intrepid and a Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX webcam

camera works fine in hardy, cheese, gstreamer test, skype
camera works in Intrepid, cheese, gstreamer test, but NOT skype

lsusb identifies camera as 046d:08ad in both Hardy and Intrepid

In hardy I used gstreamer-properties and the following settings
plugin: video for linux (v4l)
device: logitech quickcam communicate S
pipeline: v4lsrc device="/dev/video0"

If i try to change
plugin: video for linux2(v4l2)
I receive error message - Error getting capabilities for device "/dev/video0" it isn't a v4l2 driver check if it is a v4l1 driver

Skype, Options, Video Devices shows Quickcam Communicate S (/dev/video0) and everything works perfectly.

In Intrepid I used gstreamer-properties and the following settings
plugin: video for linux2 (v4l2)
device: usb camera 046d:08ad
pipeline: v4l2src device="/dev/video0"

Camera test shows clear picture, if i try video for linux v4l I get scrambled colours, (but no other error message).

However in Skype, Options, Video Devices shows usb camera 046:08ad (/dev/video0), but test produces either scrambled colours or an abrupt exit of skype without any message.

In gnome device manager under USB UHCI Controller
there are similar entries for hardy and intrepid with these few exceptions

Differences: USB Device: (Hardy) Model unknown id = 046d:08ad
                                        (Intrepid) Model Quickcam Communicate STX

Audio Streaming Interface: (Hardy) Logitech Quickcam Communicate S
                                            (Intrepid) USB Camera 046d:08ad

The built in microphone works perfectly in Skype in both Hardy and Intrepid.

Tried fresh installs of Intrepid and Linux Mint (works in 5 but not 6).
Read info on /svn.berlios.de/linux-uvc/linux-uvc/ and downloaded and tried UVC drivers, but no joy so far.
To Sum up: Hardy says its v4l1 while Intrepid says its v4l2 Skype works with Hardy but not Intrepid.
Any help or suggestions appreciated

Sorry not concentrating! The info above is not correct.

Webcam works with everything in Hardy skype, cheese, camorama and gstreamer-properties (v4l1)
In Intrepid Webcam works with gstreamer-properties (vl42) and cheese but not with skype or camorama.
When I run camorama from a terminal (Intrepid) I get the following error message.
(camorama:6765): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated.
When I use Applications, Graphics, Camorama, The error in camorama appears as "Unable to capture image"

Hi john
Thanks for help and suggestions. I've found a solution (https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/49739) for skype but camorama doesn't work. Not too bothered, as I usually boot into Hardy and only boot into Intrepid to test and check out differences and as long as it is not me causing the problem that's fine. Seems like there are still issues with v4l1 and v4l2, so hopefully they will be sorted in next version. I'm going to mark this as solved

i have ubuntu 8.10 with a logitechquick cam . It did not work and resulted in scrambled video. Video is fine under VXcam and I messed around witgh ideas form everywhere and then suddenly it worked great. I had to reinstall everything including Ubuntu as HD was reformatted. Now It is back with scrambled video . I know this is stupid but since it did work with the hardware it should work now too. The versions I think are the same except that I somehow used a repository when it worked and this time I download a deb directly from Skype. I cannot find Skype in my depository so I do not knw how to get back toa working Skype. My family says buy an Apple!
Ideas please!
