How to Copy a DVD then burn to blank DVD

Asked by allistair

I am a non technical learner. I want to copy a DVD, then burn the copied image to a blank DVD-RW. I have tried a few things that didn't work.

I am running Ubuntu 8-04. I have an Asus lap-top with 80 GB HD and 1 GB memory.

Hi,

First, insert the DVD to be copied in the DVD tray and wait for ubuntu`s response.Ubuntu will display a small dialog box asking u what the ubuntu should with the DVD.u Better close that window. GoTo COMPUTER where The Name of The DVD will be displayed.u click that icon just press "ctrl+a".now choose a free space in ur hard disk and just give "ctrl+v".so this process copies the contents of the DVD to ur hard disk.after this process is over u can take ur DVD out and u can put your Blank DVD in.
once the DVD is Read by the computer...it displays a window.select "OPEN WITH CD/DVD CREATOR".now copy the DVD contents(which r in ur harddisk) to the Just opend window(that was opened by cd/DVD craetor window). After the contents gets copied, just CLICk"Write Files"

try these steps and let me know,if u were successful.

I inserted the DVD to be copied and waited for a response. There was no response except the icon that showed up on the desktop. There was no dialog box asking what Ubuntu should do with the DVD.

I clicked on the desktop icon and Ctrl+a, and it highlighted the contents.

I don't know how to choose a free space on my HD (I'm a learner) but I hit Cntl+v anyway, which I presume would have copied the contents of the DVD to somewhere on my computer.

I put in a blank DVD and opened the CD/DVD creator, but didn't know where to retrieve the hopefully copied contents, to copy to the Creator.

Can you help ? Thanks Allistair

You should get k3b. It's a great tool. It can help you make a DVD image and then burn it back to a blank.

Thanks Micah, Will it run ok with "Gnome" ? I see it is meant for
KDE. Thanks for replying. Cheers Allistair.

Yes, you just need the kdelibs-data and kdelibs4c2a. Below are the dependencies. I run it with XFCE. That's the great thing about linux that you can run packages for other window environments if you have the proper dependencies installed.

 cdparanoia (>= 3a9.8), cdrdao (>= 1.1.7-5), genisoimage, k3b-data (= 1.0.4-8ubuntu2), kdelibs-data (>= 4:3.1.4-2), kdelibs4c2a (>= 4:3.5.8-1), libacl1 (>= 2.2.11-1), libart-2.0-2 (>= 2.3.18), libattr1 (>= 2.4.41-1), libaudio2, libc6 (>= 2.4), libdbus-1-3 (>= 1.1.1), libdbus-qt-1-1c2 (>= 0.62.git.20060814), libexpat1 (>= 1.95.8), libfontconfig1 (>= 2.4.0), libfreetype6 (>= 2.3.5), libgcc1, libhal1, libice6 (>= 1:1.0.0), libidn11 (>= 0.5.18), libjpeg62, libk3b2, libmusicbrainz4c2a (>= 2.1.5), libpng12-0 (>= 1.2.13-4), libqt3-mt (>= 3:3.3.8-b), libsm6, libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.1-21), libx11-6, libxcursor1 (>> 1.1.2), libxext6, libxft2 (>> 2.1.1), libxi6, libxinerama1, libxrandr2 (>= 2:1.2.0), libxrender1, libxt6, wodim | cdrskin, zlib1g

Thank you Micah,

I'm afraid your reply is way above my head. In simple terms what must I
do to run k3b with Ubuntu.

I'm very much an amateur.

How do I install the dependencies, and where do I get them from ?

What do I need to know about XFCE ?

Thanks for your patience. Regards Allistair

Sorry, the easiest way to install is:
sudo apt-get install k3b

apt will install dependencies for you. Should only be a few packages. If it's too many for your taste, we can try another solution.

Good luck.
