What do I need to have removable media automagically mounted upon insertion?

Asked by Uqbar

I've done a fresh installation of Kubuntu Hardy (KDE4 is not for me!) and would like to have the removable media (CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, SD cards, etc.) automagically mounted when I insert them. What to I need to install/configure?

Is there a way to mount different media (say, different CDs) in different mountpoints?

Thanks.

You don't need to configure anything for automounting to work. Just insert
usb key, cd or any other removable media and when a dialog window appears
choose "open in new window". If you just close this window, the device won't
be mounted.

In order to mount different media in different mountpoints, try seiing this
thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=818512

Please tell me whether this works for you.

Witold

Nope. It's not working at all.
Neither spindles nor USB not memory cards. (This is why I was asking).
If I insert a memory card, for example, I read in the logs:

[95435.307239] mmc0: new SD card at address 0002

while a USB stick yields to:

But definitely no popup dialog shows up.
Any hint?

that's weird....It works on all my Hardy installations (either kde 3 or 4,
doesn't matter). Did you try other usb ports? do these media work on other
machines?

I alredy installed on another machine Kubuntu Hardy and automount was working.
The devices I used in tests are working on that one.
But also CD-ROMs and DVD are not being mounted automatically on this machine.
In Dolphin's "Storage Media" I can only see the DVD reader and a Floppy (which I don't have).
Any clue?

Then maybe it is something with the machine. If the same media work on
another pc, then it's probably hardware problem..maybe usb problem.
I have one machine which has some weird usb issue and not all usb ports are
working correctly.
I think you could try another distro on the pc where you have problems.

USB works with the printer and the scanner.
The machine is ok with a live DVD distro (and the automount works!)
What'd be the checklist here?

Did you try plugging the usb key in ALL usb ports of your pc?

Yes, with no good results.
The point is that also CDROMs are not being detected.
I suspect that some update killed the automount/HAL stuff.

Regarding my other question (mounting different media in different mountpoints), the great suggested link doesn't seem to work with read-only media like CDROMs and DVDROMs.

I think my problem is related to System Settings --> Notifications --> Storage Media Notification.
In the "Advanced tab" I have:

Enable HAL backend (enabled but greyed)
Enable CD polling (enabled but greyed)
Enable medium application autostart after mount (enabled, NOT greyed and can be disabled).

I've tried to disble the last one and I got almost all the magics back: if I insert a removable medium I get the friendly popup.
The only problem is that I can only choose between "Do nothing" and "Open in a new window".

Any further idea?

Ok, so this is the normal behaviour you get after installing Kubuntu.
If you want to have other choices you should configure them - there should
be a button on the bottom of the friendly popup.
Also, please note that if you insert a cd or a dvd, you will be offered more
choices, such as create a data cd or dvd (depending on the media you
inserted.) or rip tracks if it's a music cd, etc.

By the way, in order to inconvenience that large number of electrons. a large number of trees was harmed.
