8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) - Screen dim after suspend

Asked by Mick Kielhauser

I am running Ubuntu since code stream 6 on a HP Compaq nx6325. Since my upgrade to 8.10 (from 8.04), whenever I suspend the system it returns w/ a very dim screen. Adjustment will not work (buttons or applet). The only way to reset the brightness is to log out and log back in again which resets the display server. This only happens under 8.10 and was never a problem before. This happens when connected to power. The system works but the screen is very dark.

While it is not fatal it is quiet annoying so any workaround that is a bit faster then log out/in would be really appreciated.

OK, after some more trying I found a workaround that's not too disruptive. Steps below:
1) Put system to sleep.
2) Wake up, screen dim. Buttons/applets don't work for adjusting brightness.
3) Press CTRL+ALT+F1 to switch to a text console. Screen black.
4) Adjust brightness w/ the buttons and crank it all the way up. Works now.
5) Login and then exit.
6) Back to the Gnome session w/ all programs still running and full brightness.

Maybe that also gives a hint where the bug is. Killing XORG w/ CTRL+ALT+<Backspace> does not always work.

Greetings Mick

I'm happy w/ the workaround above. It works 99% of the time. Sometimes the system comes up in what looks like 320x200 and then a reboot is the best way to clean up (killing the X-server did strange things).

I'm sure whatever causes the problem will be eventually fixed and the workaround is not too painful.

Happy New Year everyone,

Greetings Mick
