type:

sudo chmod +x jre-6u11-linux-i586.bin (it will be ask you the password)

Thanks for your reply. I tried to install from the terminal - and
received an "Authetinciation Failure"
I recently had to reinstall Ubuntu 8.10 -- which may be my problem.

What would you recommend?

Thanks again,
Beth

I have concluded that my real problem is "the terminal will not authenticate my password.
The only thing I know to do is reinstall Ubuntu 8.10.

I have tried and failed in my attempts to communicate with terminal.

Any further suggestions will be appreciated.

if you are using sudo in terminal, it will be ask your password (password root that you input in the step of installing ubuntu)
when you type your password in terminal, that will be looks nothing, but just type your password and press enter ....

Can you help with this problem?
