Can't Install flash on 64bit AMD only supports 32bit

Asked by fdassau

Dear Sir or Madam,

When I download Flash plugin for Firefox, Ubuntu 8.10 AMD64 reports an error during installation that only supports 32bit processors.
I believe the package manager reports this error. I have downloaded flash on my AMD64 dual core processor on other versions
of Linux(Fedora&suse DT10 with no issues.
Please help me.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

In order to use the 32-bit Flash plugin on a 64-bit OS, you need to use a package called 'nspluginwrapper'. All needed files, such as the plugin itself, the wrapper and needed libraries can be installed using this command in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

As a general rule, please search for programs/packages using add/remove programs, apt-get (apt-cache search <packagename> then apt-get install <packagename>) before stepping "outside the distro".

If you are wanting to try something very new, you can explore the new 64-bit version of Flash from Adobe (although depending on your experience/comfort level with Ubuntu, it's probably far easier/safer to use the above described method to install the plugin along w/ nspluginwrapper):
1. Get the file here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html
2. Quit your browser.
3. Unpackage the file. A directory with contains libflashplayer.so will be created.
4. Copy libflashplayer.so to ~/.mozilla/plugins. Create the ‘plugins’ folder if it does not exist yet.

Addt'l side note: you can get all sorts of "non-free" plugins and codecs by installing the package "ubuntu-restricted-extras". This will set up extra fonts, flash, java and multi-media codecs for you automagically!

(sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras)

There are lots of Linux users who don't care how the kernel works, but
only want to use it. That is a tribute to how good Linux is.
