can't get Broadcom 43xx to work with Xubuntu 8.10

Asked by Don Toman

I am configuring a Dell C600 with a Linksys 802.11b card WPC11 Ver. 4 after having installed Xubuntu 8.10 off the alternate installer CD.
Things work fine with a wired internet connection, but Xubuntu has no idea that there's a wireless card installed. In addition, there's no network icon on the panel.

The Linksys WPC11 V.4 has the Realtek RTL8180L, and should be supported by default. Please provide us with some additional iformation.

Open Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal, and type this:

dmesg > dmesg.txt
lspci > lspci.txt
lspcmcia > lspcmcia.txt

Put the content of dmesg.txt, lspci.txt and lspcmcia.txt here (these files will be created in your home directory).

Hi,

Something of a comedy of errors here, and still not quite solved.

This comes from the C600 running on a wired ethernet connection, running
Xubuntu 8.10, but installed off the live disk.

It's clear that the Realtek driver is present and installed. I found that
out by looking under the appropriate Wiki and was surprised to find that the
card doesn't use the Broadcom 43xx chipset. Good news and bad.

Here's a more detailed description of what I saw and what I did:

Running installation from the alternate install disk, there was no network
manager icon. I went to appfinder to locate network manager and found that
the 802.11b card had been located. My WAP uses WEP encryption, with 128-bit
hex passphrase, but I found that network manager kept rejecting the 26-hex
character string. I found that entering the hex string under the alternate
(40-bit/128-bit) worked to get the card connected...but I could not get a
connection to the internet that way. Also, the signal strength indicator
kept cycling between 100% and 5%, even though I'm sitting within 10 ft of
the WAP. The appropriate icon for wireless appeared with an announcement
that I'm connected, and a signal strength icon appeared.

I re-installed, using the live disk option...and I now find that install
does not have network manager V 0.7 on it. It has V 0.6.6. The wired
connection works (hence this message), and I'mnow trying to find the
easiest way to get V 0.7 on the machine under this install.

This is my first experience with Xubuntu. I've managed to run Ubuntu on
several machines(including a different Dell C600) for a few years with
minimal difficulty.

I guess at this point I really want to get V 0.7 installed on this machine.

Thanks for your help.

Solved by reinstalling from alternate disk.
