New user; I can't find my external HD in the GUI.

Asked by Stan Koci

I'm a brand new user. Having just reformatted my Toshiba Laptop to use Ubuntu 8.10, I found the system recognized my printer, mouse, and keyboard; but doesn't seem to recognize my Iomega External Hard Drive. I just can't find it anywhere, neither can I find a prompt to add additional devices or hardware. Can anyone help me find it so I can access all my saved files? Please?

What port is it plugged in to? If it's usb, can you post the output of the `lsusb' command?

It's plugged into an onboard USB, not sure what or where to put a lsusb command. Unfortunately, I am an infant in the world of Linux. Sorry I don't know more.

I did just try replacing the hd in the usb port that I had the printer plugged into, no change.

The lsusb command is run in the terminal. Go to applications -> accessories -> terminal, then enter `lsusb' and press enter. Select the text in the window, right click and click copy (ctrl-C won't work...), then paste that here.

This line shows that your hard drive is connected:

Bus 005 Device 005: ID 059b:0177 Iomega Corp. Hi-Speed USB-to-IDE Bridge Controller

That's a good thing. The problem you are having is either that ubuntu is not detecting and automatically mounting the drive, or there is a loose connection in the drive.

Can you post the output of `sudo fdisk -l'? (Just run it where you ran lsusb. You'll need to enter your password when it asks.)
This will help me decide which problem your drive has.

fdisk: invalid option -- '1'

Usage: fdisk [-b SSZ] [-u] DISK Change partition table
       fdisk -l [-b SSZ] [-u] DISK List partition table(s)
fdisk -s PARTITION Give partition size(s) in blocks
       fdisk -v Give fdisk version
Here DISK is something like /dev/hdb or /dev/sda
and PARTITION is something like /dev/hda7
-u: give Start and End in sector (instead of cylinder) units
-b 2048: (for certain MO disks) use 2048-byte sectors
koci@koci-laptop:~$

I hnope this helps. Thank you for all your help!
Stan

Hey Stan.. you didn't enter that fdisk command correctly.
sudo fdisk -l
the option at the end is the lower-case letter L and not the number 1 (one).
Try again and post here.

Since your external hard drive didn't show up in fdisk, it means it's
not connecting at all. This probably means there's a loose connection
inside the drive.

I took the drive to work and plugged it into a Windows 2k machine, which immediately recognized it. I was able to access all of my saved data with no problems whatsoever. Is this possible with a loose connection inside?

No, that is not possible, so the drive is fine. Then it must be a driver
problem: the driver for the drive is available in Windows but not in
ubuntu.

Can you use the windows machine to copy the files from your drive to
another drive?

I'd hate to have to go out and get another drive, but if I have to, I have to. I think I'll check the Iomega site first to see if there is a driver available.

I already checked, they don't have linux drivers. I generally avoid
Iomega since their products are usually compatible with just windows.

I have an Iomega 160Gb external HD that was recognized in Kubuntu 7.10 and previous versions. I've upgraded to 8.10 and my drive is no longer recognized - I have no idea how to mount it now. lsusb displays the following:

Bus 007 Device 005: ID 059b:0177 Iomega Corp. Hi-Speed USB-to-IDE Bridge Controller

but it is not shown with sudo fdisk -lu.
