Uninstall Ubuntu

Asked by Homer Gilbert

I currently run Ubuntu on 2 different computers. Machine # 1 is Ubuntu OS only. Machine #2 is dual boot Ubuntu/WindowsXP. Would like to make machine #2 Windows only. How do I uninstall Ubuntu without destroying the windows OS? Machine #2 is a home built with ASUS MB.

Hi,

You can just format the partition(s) on which Ubuntu is installed. No need to uninstall something specifically.

Hope this helps!

To uninstall Ubuntu

First you will have to remove GRUB from the MBR of your HDD. To do this you will have to Boot to your Windows Installation CD and choose to enter the recovery console. When you get to the command prompt you can type in this command

fixmbr

If you are having problems using you Windows Disk there are some alternative for restoring you windows MBR. For example you can use

Super Grub boot disk
ms-sys from inside ubuntu
MBRFix.exe from inside windows

This page provides information on alternate methods
http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p18.htm

After you restore your MBR you will then need need to format you Ubuntu partition as NTFS. From windows you can use the disk management tool. To open the disk management tool, go to the start menu and select Run. In the dialog box type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter. Then you can right-click the your ubuntu partition and then select format.

Hope this helps

When I boot from my original XP CD and go to "Recovery" I get a message "No hard drives were found on this computer and windows cannot proceed". I have 2 internal and 1 external HD's all of which are connected and running. What is Super Grub boot disk?
