The hardware I used is the following:

A PC with a XFX 8200GeForce motherboard with a AMD Phjenom X4 Quad Core,4 Gb
RAM and 250Gb SATA HDD.

These are the steps:

1) Download Ubuntu 8.1 64bit ISO image.
2) Burn the image on a CD
3) Boot with the Ubuntu 8.1 64 bit disk
4) Choose English
5) Choose Install Ubuntu
6) Wait for the UBUNTU logo with the horizontal moving bar
7) The following text appear on the screen
 (initramfs) [62.493148] end_request:
 I/O error, devsr0, sector xxxxxx
These texts repeat several times with another number between the
[...] brackets and sector number
8) After point 7 nothing moiré happen.

So I was unable to install Ubuntu 8.1 or 8.0
I hope I have been clearly enough in describing my problem and hope I'll
soon get a solution.

Regards

Darryl Martes

Deyo,

I/O error, devsr0, sector xxxxxx

That line suggest a bad disc or some problem with the optical drive (or disk controller), but it's more probable that you got a bad cd. To verify, there's an option in the menu of the bootcd to check the disk, select that option and see if the cd is ok.

If the cd has errors, verify the image you downloaded. I assume you burned the cd under Windows, so here is a utility to verify the integrity of the downloaded .iso image:

http://www.irnis.net/gloss/md5sum-windows.shtml

Compare the md5sum of your .iso with the one from the site you downloaded the image. If the image is ok, then burn the cd again, try with a lower speed (ie. 16x).

I just saw some other people reporting similar problems with GF8200 chipsets, in some cases a BIOS update solved the problem, in others you have to boot passing some parameters to the kernel.

Do what I advised you in my previous post anyway, and look for a BIOS update too.

I am having the same problem..almost. I do not get the I/O srrors but Ubuntu 8.10 will not see my SATA HD but it will see an external usb HD and I put a IDE HD in and it saw that one. I tried both the 32 bit and 64 bit I am now running the 64 bit on the IDE HD. I just don't want to wate a 500g sata HD. I have read in other posts that it is an issue with the kernal not being able to see the SATA hd on a Nvidia board.
I have the xfx Geforce 8200 with an AMD daul core processor 4 gigs of ram a Seagate 500g sata HD and now a 120g WD IDE HD. If any else know of a solution please let us know.

Thanks

I have this board as well, just purchased it earlier this week.

See the following page for instructions:

http://unixzen.com/?articles/2008/10/05/ubuntu-8-10-on-the-xfx-8200.html

Essentially you need to pass the option "pci=nomsi" at the end of the grub startup command.

On a separate note, and really this needs a new thread but I'll ask it here anyways, what have your experiences been with audio and video on this board with 8.10? I'm running 8.04 because I need bluetooth capabilities and 8.10 has been horrid with me on my laptop in these regards.

I have this board as well and have been wrestling with it for the past couple of days.
The posts here have been quite helpful so I'm posting my success.

System is XFXGeForce 8200 w/ Phenom 9500
1 Tb SATA hard disk
SATA DVD RW/CD drive
8 Gb memory

From this and other sites I have:
set the BIOS for SATA mode = AHCI mode

sorry, didn't finish...

on the Ubuntu 8.10 (or 8.04lts) live cd
use the "pci=nomsi" on the grub startup command
plus set the other options [F6] check both "noapic" and "nolapic"
with [F4] set the install to safe graphic

This all looked like it worked until the re-boot.

The final fix was to flash the bios to ver 1.4 (from XFX site).
I had to temporarily hook up an old CD drive to the IDE header to run the flash utility (XFX gives an ISO to built a self-booting CD).

Now it all works.
Hope this helps
