I have the same problem. No test in menus on Open Office products

Please try

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get --reinstall install openoffice.org-gnome

Then based of the Gnome style are you using please try to reinstall/install... type:

sudo apt-get --reinstall install openoffice.org-style-default
sudo apt-get --reinstall install openoffice.org-style-human
sudo apt-get --reinstall install openoffice.org-style-andromeda
sudo apt-get --reinstall install openoffice.org-style-crystal
sudo apt-get --reinstall install openoffice.org-style-hicontrast
sudo apt-get --reinstall install openoffice.org-style-industrial
sudo apt-get --reinstall install openoffice.org-style-tango

sorry for taking so long to reply to this answer, had given up on receiving help with this one, this does solve my problem desktop effects were causing the problem, thankyou for your help

Disable desktop effects worked for me with same problem in Openoffice 2.4.
