Won't boot from alternative CD copy.

Asked by goedel

My CD copy of your alternative (textual) Ubuntu will not boot from the CD. I have checked my BIOS and found that the CD drive is the primary booting device.

I have read some technical jargon about determining the MD5sum, etc., but I am not willing to proceed to this level of detail.

You should be able to provide a file that will load from the CD drive without complication. If you cannot, then I cannot trust that your Ubuntu will be any better than Windows, in other words a time-waster!

Sorry to hear you are having an issue with a self recorded CD from one of the alternate CD's. Could you please provide a little information.

 * What version of Ubuntu did you download?
 * What was the application you used to record the ISO image to CD?
 * At what recording speed did you record the ISO image to CD?

Please do not cast aspersions on Ubuntu Linux until we can sensibly determine if this was an ISO error, an error is the download process or a user error in the burning process.

Regards

Phil

My "aspersions" were directed at the technical management. They were not published in a newspaper or a TV ad but only on this website, which I feel is an appropriate place for an acerbic reaction. I spent a considerable time to download, to copy and to attempt to boot the result with no success.

To answer your questions:

I downloaded the recommended 8.04 version.
The application used to make the CD is Nero, a popular CD generator.
The ISO image was recorded at a speed of 4800 for the 700MB of data.

Thank you for your interest.

Very easy to do:

1) - please install a program to check the md5sum of your downloaded .iso file https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM#MD5SUM%20on%20Windows and compare the result number with: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes the numbers MUST be equals.

2) download "infrarecorder" burning software: and make a cd at lower speed you can do from that good iso image, detail here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto#Windows

Then try to start your pc from that self burned Ubuntu 8.04 alternate cd.

Hope this helps

- Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS (Hardy Heron) http://releases.ubuntu.com/hardy/

- Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) http://releases.ubuntu.com/intrepid/

By the way the latest Ubuntu is Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex (suggested)

Please ask here if you are still in trouble.

Hope this helps

I take it that the match of the numbers is a check on the reliability of
the downloaded iso file and its transcription to a CD. My original
download proceeded without any error messages, and the copying to a CD
proceeded without any error messages. Admittedly, I did not "verify"
when I wrote onto the CD. It would have taken too long.

Your suggestions might work, but I do not wish to spend more time on
this business. If downloading and transcribing is not reliable, then
ordering a CD by mail should be the only recommendation - in my
opinion. For a few bucks, it would be worth it to avoid all this. I
naively thought that if a download is offered, then it is a reliable
procedure.

Very thoughtful of you to reply. Thanks!
